I should (would) like to give my

considerations on this subject.

We analyze all possible ways

this game could be played out.

Such actions do have some

validity and might even provide

some information about the

event. информацию об этом событии;

2) после безличных конструкций типа: it is necessary необходимо (чтобы); it is desirable желательно (чтобы); it is important важно (чтобы); it is urgent настоятельно требуется, крайне необходимо (чтобы),например:

И is urgent that the sequence of Крайне необходимо, чтобы

actions be changed.

It is desirable that this method

(should) be tested in practice.

It is essential that the substance

(should) be chemically pure.

It is important that the sub- Важно то, что это вещество является

stance is chemically pure.

действие);

3) после г л а г о л о в, выражающих предложение, приказание, пожелание, настояние (в роли сказуемого в главном предложении с последующим that типа: to insist настаивать на том чтобы, to ask просить (чтобы), to demand требовать (чтобы), to require требовать (чтобы), to propose предлагать (чтобы), to request запрашивать, просить (чтобы); to suggest предлагать (чтобы).Например:

We insist that a meeting (should)Мы настаиваем на том, что-бы

be held as soon as possible.

They suggested that he (should)Они предложили, чтобы он

explain his explanation.

We proposed that the conditions

(should) be made more

severe.

Не requires (that) the problem Он требует, чтобы к этому

(should) be taken seriously.

They asked that he (should) be

brought to them.

П р и м е ч а н и е. Обратите внимание на то, что глаголы to ask, to require и to request требуют, чтобы сказуемое в придаточном предложении имело форму Passive.

Как вы могли заметить, в английском придаточном предложении может использоваться или старая форма сослагательного наклонения (инфинитив без to: be held, explain, be made, be taken, be brought — эта форма характерна для American English), или новая, аналитическая (с вспомогательным глаголом, обычно should: should be taken, should be changed, should explain — эта форма характерна для British English);

so that —(так) чтобы in order that — для того чтобы lest — чтобы не (к глаголу) but for — если бы не not for(if it were not for)— если бы не as if — как если бы as though — как если бы

См.

If it were not for hope, the heart

would break.

But for youI should have solved

the problem differently.

You should revise the material

lest you forget it.

It is as if hewere my enemy.

бы он был моим врагом;

It would be more convenient if

special machine we r e available,

This approach could not be

followed even if it had been

attractive.

The key to open-mindedness

When we really understand the significance of the fact that we don't know all about anything, it is easy to acquire habits of open-mindedness.

For instance, if you did know all about something, there would be no sense in keeping an open mind. There would be no need to listen to what anyone else had to tell you or to keep your eyes open in surveying the territory. Nothing would be new to you. Everything you planned would work out perfectly because your knowledge would be complete and have complete predictability! You would be justified in refusing to listen to what others had to say, and you could forever renounce surveying the territory for new or different ideas.

We have all heard speeches on the desirability and the necessity of keeping open minds — but we are seldom told how to do it. The way to get and keep an open mind is to repeat to yourself, "I can't know all about anything. No one else knows all about anything. Therefore, I have no right to close my mind. I must watch for important facts that may have been overlooked. Some hidden factors may be found that will help me make my knowledge adequate."
