My Family

Let me introduce myself to you. I am Olexandr Petrenko. I’m nearly eighteen. I live in Sumy. Now I want to tell you a few words about my family.

Our family is neither large nor small. I am not the only child in the family. My parents have two more children besides me. Thus I have got an elder brother and a younger sister.

First of all I’d like to say a few words about my parents. They are not old at all. Father is forty five, mother is three years his junior. My father is a veterinarian and runs a clinic for pets. He is a tall well-built man with curly dark hair and brown eyes. My dad is handy with many things and can fix almost everything in our house. He is a very sociable person. I think I take after him. My mum is a good-looking woman. She is an experienced economist. She is fond of house plants very much. We have a lot of pots with different indoor plants on the windowsills, shelves and even on the floor. My parents have been married for 25 years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books and films. For example, my father likes detective stories but my mother prefers romantic ones. My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesn’t go in for sports at all.

My sister Helen is a pupil of the tenth form. She is two years my junior. Helen is rather tall and slender. She is a blue-eyed, fair-haired girl. My sister is a very active young person. She is fond of music and dancing.

My brother is six years my senior. He is a civil engineer, very efficient and professional. He is married and has his own family. They are four in the family. My brother has a wife and two children – a son and a daughter. His wife is a manager. My sister-in-law is a very elegant woman, always well-dressed. She is energetic and industrious, with a sense of humour. My niece Masha and my nephew Sashko are still very little. They are pretty children and I like to play with them.

My grandparents live in the country. They are pensioners. We often visit them and help in their garden. I have both aunts and uncles. They live in different places. We are always glad to see each other.

Answer the questions.

1) What is Olexandr’s family like?

2) What does his father do?

3) What are his parents fond of?

4) What is Helen like?

5) How old is Olexandr’s brother?

6) Who does brother’s family consist of?

12. Find in the text and read out the sentences describing the following:

a) father’s appearance;

b) mother’s occupation;

c) Helen’s hobby;

d) sister’s-in-law character.
