Parks

People have been building cities and are living in them since very ancient times but they have always been trying not to separate themselves from nature too much, as nature gives rest. That is why they have been surrounding with gardens their stone and wood; wooden houses in cities and towns. They have been planting parks and leaving large areas of forest unchanged.

A park is an area with either planted or natural vegetation, roads, alleys, water reservoirs and various things to help people to rest and to spend their free time usefully.

Parks are of two types: regular (or architectural) and irregular. Regular parks are planned in geometrical proportions of alleys, roads, gardens and waters, they are usually decorated with fountains, sculptures, etc.; in irregular parks trees, roads and waters imitate natural landscape unchanged by man.

Parks were built already in very ancient time. We know of wonderful architectural park of ancient Egypt. Everyone heard of the Babylonian suspension gardens. Beautiful landscape type parks

Parks

The peculiar feature of Russian parks has always been most harmonious union of man-made design with the surrounding landscape. Famous world over are old Russian parks in Petersburg and near it. "Summer Park" in the centre of the city was founded by Peter I. It is a geometrically proportional garden with several dozens of sculptures of Italian masters. The park occupies a little piece of land washed by the Neva, Moika, Fontanka. Large old trees grow here. Krivol, Pushkin, Shevchenko and many other poets, writers and painters liked to rest here. The park in Petrodvoretz is known for its fountains, whose number is more than 250. It founded by Peter I on the seashore. Such brilliant architects as Rastrelly, Voronikhin, Shubin and Martos took part

in its construction. People come here to have a look at it and to rest. Not less beautiful are the parks in Pavlovsk, Lomonosov and Pushkin.

In our country there are many old and new Recreation (Public) Parks. Their construction and foundation was started in 1934 accordance with a special government order, and now there are such parks in nearly all the cities and towns of Russia. The aim of recreation parks is to give the population all the opportunities to spend their free time most usefully. In such parks you may listen to a lecture of a well-known scientist, to meet famous people, to listen to a concert, to go in for sports, to see a film, etc. Usually these parks are regularly planned or both lands-cape and architectural styles are combined. The centre of the park is usually architecturally planned while periphery is often left as natural landscape with narrow irregular roads, little

lakes and tree-covered slopes. Examples of such parks are the Moscow Recreation Parks named after Gorky, Sokolniki park and others.

"LONDON'S PARKS"

- What is the most beautiful in London?

- The parks.

"This gate is opened at 5.30 a. m. and closed at 9 p.m.'.' This is the notice on a park gate. Who wants to go for a walk at 5.30 in the morning?

Very many people go for an hour walk before going to work, because walking makes you feel that you are far away in the country, not in the center of one of the largest cities of the world.

There are lawns and flower-beds, fountains and avenues in the park, but mostly the parks consist of trees and grass and water. They are planned to look as natural as nature itself.

If gardens and parks are "lungs" of a city, London must have wonderful health. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park - only these two - have an open ground of 250 hectares.

There is Green Park and Richmond Park, Victoria Park and Fins- bury Park and so about 300 000 acres of land together. You may walk for hours and hours from one park into another. They go through the middle of the town.

The wonderful Kew Garden is a botanical garden, probably the largest in the world, with many orangeries and hot-houses. Almost all the exotic plants and flowers can be found there and you may sit on the grass under a tropical palm-tree.

St. James Park is famous for its water birds; there is a big lake in the middle of the park and there are many birds swimming

on the water, among them pelicans.

Hyde Park is really the National London Park. There is a big artificial lake running the whole length of the park. It is the most popular bathing place. Here is the place of all sorts of national parades and mass meetings.

Kensington Gardens are as green and full of flowers and big trees as Hyde Park. Many children come here with their mothers. Little Londoners are very fond of animals and water birds living in the park. They always feed their pets.

In the parks many people sit and walk, some in the shade and some in the sunshine. They listen to the birds and enjoy tranquility.

6. Make up sentences with "there + to be" instead of the verb "to have". Model: London has many parks. There are many parks in London.

1. 1. Each park in London has lawns and flower-beds, fountains and avenues.

2. St.James Park has a big lake in the middle.

3. Hyde Park has a big artificial lake running the whole length of the park.

4. Kensington Gardens have a lot of birds and animals.

5. Kew Gardens have almost all exotic plants and flowers, growing on the Earth.

"KEW GARDENS"

Kew Gardens are the most fantastic gardens in Britain. It is south-west London, near the river Thames. Kew occupies an area over 121 hectares and includes hot-houses, an ice house, a pagoda, a palace and all sorts of plants and trees.

Like many other famous places, Kew Gardens were once associated with Britain's Kings and queens.

The Gardens date back to 1720 and belonged to George II and George III. Kew was especially associated with George III. He chose this place where he went for fresh air and a rest from

London. Perhaps George III was not a very good king, but he was an excellent gardener. He created at Kew the royal pleasure gardens and a botanical centre.

Most fashionable gardens at that time had ruined temples, exo- tic buildings and statues. In Kew Gardens there is a ten-storeyed Chinese pagoda with painted wooden dragons and thousands of pieces of glass which shine in the sun

George employed a talented landscape gardener Capability Brown to improve the gardens at Kew.

During King George's reign there were many expeditions by scientists. Botanists went all over the world to look for rare plants. Collector brought back flowers, shrubs, bananas, tea, coffee, cocoa, different kinds of woods, medicines.

In 1801, someone discovered a giant water-lily in the Amazon. He tried three times to bring the seeds back to England, but they always died because of the cold, In 1849 a special hot-house was built at Kew for the water lilies.

Today you can see them. In April, the leaves are small, they grow 2 inches every night, until they measure 6 feet (2 metres) across.

Apart from rare flowers and trees, beautiful lakes and interesting buildings, one of the most fantastic sights of Kew is the bluebell wood. In late spring, you can walk for half an hour in a wood that is covered completely with a blue carpet of flowers.
