Read the text about the capital-city of Ukraine. Kyiv
Kyiv, an amazing city with population of nearly 3 million people, situated on the Dnipro river, is the capital of Ukraine. It is the city of great events and outstanding people. Kyiv is one of the oldest Slavic centres founded more than 1500 years ago. By the ancient legend Kyiv was founded by three brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid. They were impressed by the beauty of Dnipro’s hills, stopped to settle here and called the town in honour of the eldest brother. Old Kyiv was built on the high right bank of the Dnipro river, and the city has many hills, parks and open areas. Today Kyiv is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kyiv Metro. As the capital of Ukraine, it has major administrative functions being the seat of Ukraine’s government. Being the largest city of Ukraine, Kyiv is the leading industrial and commercial center of the country. Its industry is the concentration of over 350 large enterprises mainly in machine-building, chemical, food processing, consumer goods and other industries. The most important centre for research and education in Ukraine, Kyiv has a number of universities, colleges, and research institutes, notably Kyiv National University named after Shevchenko (1834) and the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The capital of Ukraine has got a great cultural potential. There are more than 30 museums, about 200 unique architectural monuments, 33 theatres, a lot of constant active art exhibitions. Kyiv is one of the greenest cities of the world, it has more than 60 parks. The art and architecture of Kyiv are world treasures. The Cathedral of St. Sophia, where the princes of Kyiv were crowned, has outstanding mosaics and frescoes dating back to the 11th century. The Percherska Lavra, the Monastery of the Caves, has two 11th-century cathedrals on its grounds in addition to its world-famous catacombs, bell tower, and museum collections. Close to the center of the city there is the Golden Gate, once the main entrance to the city, which dates back to 1037. Among the major attractions is Andriivska (St.Andrew) Church - the real pearl of Ukrainian architecture, built in 1754 by B. Rastrelli in baroque style. The legend says that on the place where the Dnipro river flows nowadays a sea used to be. When Saint Andrew came to Kyiv and put a cross on the place where Andriivska church now stands, the sea receded. When the church was built, a spring appeared under the altar. That’s why Andriivska Church doesn’t have bells. The legend says that the sounds of bells would awake sleeping water and Kyiv would be overflowed. Kyiv's green hills above the Dnipro river, spotted with churches and monuments attract thousands of tourists every year.
