The Gerund and the Verbal Noun (Герундий и отглагольное существительное)

Отглагольное существительное. образованное от основы глагола при помощи суффикса -ing., совпадает по форме с герундием и также часто выражает процесс, но оно явля­ется полноценным существительным со всеми его свой­ствами и переводится на русский язык существительным. Между отгла­гольным существительным и герундием имеются различия, о которых нужно помнить.

 

Основные признаки отглагольного существительного

 

 

1. Отглагольное существительное, в отличие от герундия, не имеет формы времени и залога, не принимает прямое дополнение и не определяется наречием.

 

2. Отглагольное существительное употребляется с ар­тиклем,

The smoking of cigarettes is harmful for health. Курить сигареты — вредно для здоровья. Курение сигарет — вредно для здоровья.

 

 

3. Отглагольное существительное имеет форму множественного числа,

The readings of this device are wrong. Показания этого прибора ошибочны.

 

4.Отглагольное существительное может опреде­ляться прилагательным, притяжательным местоимением или существительным в притяжательном падеже, а также употребляться с предлогом of.

The smoking of cigarettes is harmful for health. Курение сигарет — вредно для здоровья.

5.Отглагольное существительное чаще всего переводит­ся на русский язык существительным.

Основные признаки герундия

 

1. Герундий не употребляется с артиклем,

 

2.Герундий не имеет формы множественного числа,

 

3.Герундий не может определяться прилага­тельным и не употребляется с предлогом of.

4.Герундий может переводиться на русский язык сущест­вительным, инфинитивом или придаточным предложением

Gerund

His saying so did not impress us. To, что он так сказал, не произ­вело на нас никакого впечатления.

The telephone stopped ringing. Телефон пе­рестал звонить.

Peter's coming late sur­prised everybody. Всех удивило, что Петр пришел поздно.

Verbal Noun

All their sayings and doings did not impress him. Все их сло­ва (разговоры) и поступки не произвели на него никакого впечатления.

Не was interrupted by the ring­ing of the telephone. Его пре­рвал звонок телефона.

The early coming of spring sur­prised everybody. Всех уди­вил ранний приход весны.

Exercise 1. Read and translate these sentences. Pay attention to the differ­ence between gerunds and verbal nouns.

 

1. She was watching the comings and goings in the house. 2.There is no telling when they will manage to get there. 3."I do not mind the children playing in the garden," he said.

4.Jane told us of his various comings and goings. 5. "I love bathing. Is the bathing safe here?" she asked Jane. 6. Do you remember my asking you to lend me a dictionary? 7. It seemed that the stopping of the clocks had stopped time in that house. 8. "The reading of today's paper will take you quite a time. There's a lot of interesting material in it," said Ann. 9. Reading papers took him a lot of time every day. 10. His ideas are well worth listening to. 11. He liked neither reading aloud ^l
nor being read to. 12. The child was tired of running quickly all the way.

Your having written is re­ally no excuse for your not coming on the day fixed. 4. Such doings can hardly be explained. 5. The mo­tor was carefully examined before starting. 6. I am very pleased to meet you after hearing so much about you. 7. Your hair wants cutting. 8. I shall look for­ward to seeing you again. 9. It was no use talking about it any longer. 10, Sleeping is necessary. 11. We felt so disappointed at your having missed nearly half the programme. 12. The building of this house will cost much money. 13. Are you dressed for going out? 14. I hate the idea of doing it once more.

 

Then came a general lighting of pipes and cigars.

But you don't mind being asked to help us, do
you? 17. The forest resounded with the hooting of
owls and the howling of wolves.

With a sud­den tightening of the muscles he became aware of a figure walking noiselessly beside him. 4. She praised herself for having come. 5. Having stopped crying, the child quieted down to hard thinking. 6. The old,clock kept ticking on the mantelpiece, as if count­ing the seconds left before the coming of daylight. 7. Remembering that time was like going back to his childhood and reliving those happy days. 8. Looking back upon that time, he realized how happy he had been then. 9. Tom lived there like a paying guest, attracting very little attention of the others.
