By the Names of Our Great Doctors

The first street named after' the great Russian doctor N. I. Pirogov appeared in Moscow in 1919 Now this street is like a small medical center. The first Medical Institute and three medical research institutes are situated² in this street There are three monuments to great Russian doctors in this street, they are the monuments to I. M. Sechenov, the famous³ physiologist, to N.I.Pirogov and to N. F. Filatov, one of the first podiatrists⁴ in Russia. There is also a hos­pital for children in Moscow named after him.

If you look at the map of Moscow you will see a long street named after I. V. Rusakov, a Russian doctor, a member of the Communist Party from 1905, who took part in⁵ three revolutions and who perished⁶ in 1921. There is also a hospital named after Rusakov.

A great Russian physician A. A. Ostroumov worked in Moscow and in 1922 two streets were named after this great man. One of the Moscow hospi­tals and a medical school have the name of Ostroumov.

hi 1935 one of the Moscow streets was named after V. A. Obuch.V. A. Obuch worked in different hospitals of Moscow from 1901 and after the Great October Revolution during more than 10 years he was the head of Moscow Health Organization. He treated V.I.Lenin and his family. The Institute of Hy­giene and Professional Diseases is situated in this street.

After 1940 two more streets, Semashko and Burdenko, were added⁷ to the family of medical streets. N. A Semashko was the first Minister of Health in our country and everybody knows the large hospital named after him in Mos­cow.

N.N.Burdenko was the first president of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Burdenko Research Institute is knownall ower the world.

In the next ten years there appeared several bystreets that reminded us of S.P. Botkin,I.V. Sechenov, L.I. Mechnikow and A. I. Abrikosov.

In Moscow there are two research medical institutes and a monument to a well- known doctor-humanistF. P. Gaas.

There appeared the names of V.M.Behterov, N.F.Gamaley,N.N.Priorov and the great Russian physiologist-academician I.P.Pavlov on the plates of many houses in Moscow.
