Britain or Great Britain (GB) is the name for England, Wales and Scotland. Britain is the eighth largest island in the world. The British Isles is the name for England, Wales and Scotland, both parts of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) consists of 4 countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, the capital of Nоrthern Ireland is Belfast, the capital of Wales is Cardiff, the capital of England.

London is the capital of the UK too.

Great Britain stretches for 1000 kilometers from the South to the extreme North and for 500 kilometers in its widest part.

It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the North-west, North and South-west, and is separated from the European countries by the North Sea, the Strait of Dover and the English Channel. It is close to the continent, being only 22 miles wide.

The population of the UK is about 60 million people. The population density is highest in England and lowest in Scotland. Out of every five people live in towns and cities. The largest of them are Birmingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow, and Belfast.

People who live in Britain are called the British. Many people think that «the English» is the same as «the British». But England is only one of four nations in the UK. The Scots, the Welsh, and the Northern Irish are the British too. They sometimes get angry when they are called «the English».

There are also millions of British people whose parents came to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s from the Caribbean, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong and other places. Their homes are mainly in big British cities like London, Bimingham, and Manchester.
