Числівники означають кількість предметів або порядок предметів при лічбі.

Числівники діляться на кількісні, які відповідають на питання «скільки?» і порядкові, які відповідають на питання «який?».

Кількісні числівники від 13 до 19 утворюються додаванням суфікса -teen до основи.

Числівники, що означають десятки, мають суфікс -ty. Порядкові числівники окрім перших трьох (first, second, third) утворюються додаванням суфікса -th або -eth до відповідних кількісних числівників. Вони завжди вживаються з означеним артиклем.

Прийміть до уваги, що числівники hundred, thousand, million не мають закінчення - s, коли перед ними стоїть інший числівник. Коли числівники означають невизначену кількість, вони вживаються у множині із закінченням - s, за яким слідує прийменник of. Порівняєте:

Thousands of books five thousand books

Millions of people 2 million people

Номера сторінок, будинків, квартир, транспорту, позначаються не порядковими, а кількісними числівниками. У цих випадках іменники вживаються без артикля: page 15, house 40, flat 13, bus 72.

Як читати дати?

Числівник, який означає рік, ділиться на дві частини - число сотень, а потім - число десятків і одиниць.

1900 - nineteen hundred, in (the year) nineteen hundred

2000 - two thousand, in (the year) two thousand

1905 – nineteen(hundred and) five, in (the year) nineteen five

Дати читаються таким чином:

April 12, 2001 1) on the twelfth of April, two thousand one

2) on April the twelfth, two thousand one

Для визначення часу

Якщо хвилинна стрілка (the long hand) знаходиться в правій частині циферблату (а face) - використовується прийменник past.

It's ten past eleven. 10 хвилин на дванадцяту.

It's а quarter past eleven. Чверть на дванадцяту.

It's half past eleven. Половина дванадцятого.

Якщо хвилинна стрілка знаходиться в лівій частині циферблату, то використовується прийменник to.

It's ten to twelve. Без десяти дванадцять.

It's а quarter to twelve. За чверть дванадцята.

It's twenty minutes to twelve. За двадцять хвилин дванадцята.

It is eleven sharp. Рівно одинадцята.

Час до полудня позначається a.m. (від лат. ante meridiem), а пополудні p.m. (від лат. post meridiem).

Наприклад: 10 a.m. - Десята година ранку.

6 р.m - Шоста година вечора
