Функции герундия в предложении

 

Герундий может выполнять в предложении те же функции, что и существительное, т.е.:

1. подлежащее (стоит всегда перед сказуемым)

Reading English books is useful for our students.

Читать (чтение) английские книги полезно нашим студентам.

2. именная часть сказуемого (стоит после глагола-связки to be)

Deciding is acting – Решить значит действовать.

The profession of a builder is building houses, plants, towns.

Профессия строителя состоит в том, чтобы строить дома, заводы города.

3. часть глагольного составного сказуемого после глаголов, выражающих начало, продолжение и конец действия:

to begin to continue to finish

to startto go onto sto

начинать продолжать заканчивать

He went on constructing models.

Он продолжал конструировать модели.

4. дополнение

а) прямое дополнение

I remember having visited this place some years ago.

Я помню, что, я посетил это место несколько лет назад.

б) предложное дополнение обычно после глаголов, прилагательных, причастий, требующих после себя определенных предлогов.

to depend (on, upon), to result (in), to insist (on), to object (to), to succeed (in), to think (of), to hear (of), to be fond of, to be proud of, to be interested in

They are fond of playing chess.

Они любят играть в шахматы.

5. определение (после определяемого слова, с предлогом of или for).

We used this method of studying the scientific data.

6. обстоятельство (употребляется всегда с предлогами by, without, with, in, on, before, after, instead of, in addition to, because of, besides, thanks to и др.).

Of coming to the laboratory he began a new experiment.

По приходе (придя) в лабораторию он начал новый эксперимент.

При переводе представляет трудность герундий в функции подлежащего, определения, именной части сказуемого, обстоятельства.

Отличие герундия от отглагольного существительного

 

Помимо причастия I и герундия, в английском языке есть еще одна форма с окончанием -ing – отглагольное существительное. Его признаком обычно является наличие перед -ing – формой артикля и употребление предлога of перед последующим существительным.

The combining of oxygen with another substance is called oxidation.

Соединение кислорода с другим веществом называется окислением.

Отглагольное существительное, в отличие от герундия и причастия, может употребляться во множественном числе.
