Exercise 1. Describe your class room. Use there is /there isn't/there are /there aren't. Write ten sentences at least.

Exercise 2. Put in there is /there isn't / is there /there are /there aren't / are there.

Exercise 4. Put in there is/was or it is/was. Some sentences are questions (is there…...? / is it…...? etc.) and some are negative (isn't/wasn't).

1 The journey took a long time. There was a lot of traffic.

2 What's the new restaurant like? Is it good?

3 '…… a bookshop near here?' 'Yes, …… one in Hill Street.'

4 When we got to the cinema,……a queue outside……a very long queue, so we decided not to wait.

5 I couldn't see anything……completely dark.

8 …… Keith's birthday yesterday. We had a party.

Exercise 5. Are these sentences right or wrong? Change it to there where necessary.

1 They live on a busy road. It must be a lot of noise. WRONG: There must be...

2 Last winter it was very cold and it was a lot of snow……

3 I wish it was warmer. I hate cold weather……

4 It used to be a church here, but it was knocked down……

5 It's a long way from my house to the nearest shop……

6 Why was she so unfriendly? It must have been a reason……

7 I don't know who will win but it's sure to be a good match……

8 'Where can we park the car?' 'Don't worry. It's sure to be a car park somewhere.'

9 After the lecture it will be an opportunity to ask questions……

UNIT 15. PAST CONTINUOUS.

ITEM 15.1 PAST CONTINUOUS (POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, INTERROGATIVE).

Exercise 1. Complete the questions. Use was/were -ing. Use what/where/why if necessary.

Exercise 2. You saw Joe in the street yesterday afternoon, he was going shopping. What was he doing? Write positive or negative sentences.

Exercise 3. What were you doing at the following times? Write one sentence as in the examples. The past continuous is not always necessary (see the second example).

2 (at 5 o'clock last Saturday) I was on a train on my way to London.

3 (at 10.15 yesterday morning)

4 (at 4.30 this morning)

5 (at 7.45 yesterday evening)

Exercise 4. Use your own ideas to complete these sentences. Use the past continuous.

ITEM 15.2 PAST CONTINUOUS OR PAST SIMPLE.

Exercise 1. Put the verbs into the correct form, past continuous or past smple.

1 Jane was waiting (wait) for me when I arrived (arrive).

3 '……(you/go) out last night?' 'No, I was too tired.'

Exercise 2. Put the verb into the past continuous or past simple.
