READING

Read the information.

Extra-curricular activities

There are lots of societies, clubs and projects to get involved in whilst studying at the university. During Freshers' Week (the first week of university for new undergraduates), most students visit the Freshers' Fair, where there are stalls representing all societies and clubs available.

Getting involved in a university related activity is a great way to make new friends - and boost your CV. You could:

  • Join a student society or club - whether it's sport, music or even chocolate club, you'll learn about teamwork and meet loads of new people.
  • Volunteer - join in with student voluntary work and projects.
  • Have fun while raising money for charity.
  • Get creative - write for a student magazine or the student radio station at the university
  • Find a relevant work experience or vacation job through the University Careers Service.
  • Get involved in running the Students' Union - you could run to become a student representative.
  • Broaden your horizons by choosing a course that includes a foreign language or a year abroad.
  • Make the most of lectures, tutorials and seminars to ask questions, make presentations and get used to speaking in public.
  • Get involved in special projects and competitions open to students - you might end up winning an award!

SPEAKING

Decide which of these activities you would rather take part in. Give reasons for your choice.

PERSONAL CHALLENGES: MOON WALK

Claire Jones is a student. But she is aiming to raise money for a breast cancer charity by doing a “Moon Walk”. She will be joining 15,000 women in bras in a 26, 2-mile power-walk through the night around Hyde Park, London. She has two months to prepare. Here, she outlines her training plan.

a) ___________

The MoonWalk is a power-walking marathon set up by Walk the Walk, a charity that raises money for breast cancer all over the world. Participants always wear decorated bars, and that includes the man!

b) __________

As you can see, I’m not a health freak, but for the MoonWalk I need to be in good health, so I’ll be working on my stamina and general fitness levels. I’ll be going to the gym four times a week, doing a combination of cardio, aerobics and strength-training.

c) __________

I’m the type of person who likes chips with my chips, so I’m a bit worried about the diet. Apparently, carbohydrates are crucial for keeping energy levels up when you’re training for a marathon, but they have to be right carbs. I’ll probably be supplementing my diet with protein drinks and vitamins.

During the MoonWalk, it’s important to maintain blood sugar levels, so I’ ll be eating energy bars, bananas and other fruit snacks at regular intervals. Of course it’s also vital to stay hydrated, so I’ll be drinking plenty of water along the way.

d) _________

Power-walking gear is very similar to running gear: light clothes that allow the air to circulate and your skin to breath. I’ll definitely be investing in a good pair of trainers. Although power-walking doesn’t put as much pressure on the joints as running does, it’s still essential to have the right support for the soles of your feet and your ankles. Most of the heat from your body escapes from your head, so I’ll be wearing a hat. And like everybody else, I’ll be wearing a decorated bra.

e) __________

Any exercise is a huge mental challenge for me. It’s a constant battle for me to stay motivated enough to keep up with the training. I need to visualise myself reaching the finishing line … hopefully not on my hands and knees.

Also, in the back of my mind I need to remember the reason for doing this: when I’ve completed this MoonWalk, I’ll have contributed a sum of money to a very good cause, and that’s what will keep me going.
