(Говорят, что этот человек много работает.) • The student was supposed to know that law. (Студенту полагалось знать этот закон.) • Contracts have been known to go as high as £100 m. (Ста­ло известно, что суммы контрактов доходили до 100 милли­онов фунтов стерлингов.) Особенность оборота состоит в том, что действие, вы­ражаемое инфинитивом, относится к подлежащему, а сто­ящий перед ним глагол указывает на отношение к этому дей­ствию (на его вероятность, известность, предсказуе­мость) со стороны говорящего или вообще неуказанного лица. При переводе на русский язык английское подлежащее переводится подлежащим, инфинитив - сказуемым, а гла­гол в личной форме - неопределенно-личным предложени­ем. Число глаголов, после которых употребляется оборот, ограничено, и их можно разделить на три группы: 1. 3. Составные глаголы:

prove оказываться

be sure конечно, несомненно

seem казаться

be unlikely вряд ли, едва ли

При переводе необходимо учитывать время глагола, стоящего перед инфинитивом:

• The circulation of this newspaper was proposed to be increased by one-third. (Полагали, что тираж этой газеты увеличится на одну треть.)

• The recent price rise is understood to be a temporary phenomenon. (Считают, что недавнее повышение цен является временным явлением.)

Необходимо учитывать также и форму инфинитива. Infinitive Indefinite или Continuous переводится сказуемым в

настоящем времени, a Infinitive Perfect или Perfect Continuous - сказуемым в прошедшем времени:

• Не is said to go to London. (Говорят, что он едет в Лондон.)

• Не is said to have gone to London. (Говорят, что он уехал в Лондон.)

Примечание 1:

A) Обратите внимание на то, что глаголу, стоящему перед инфинитивом, может предшествовать модальный глагол:

• The CFTC (The Commodity Futures Trading Commission) has to be seen to be an effective oversight body if the industry is to remain viable.

• Any such investment can be expected to have a direct effect upon employment.

• This may well prove to be the last annual meeting.

• They should be required to accept all applicants.

B) Этот глагол может сопровождаться различными наречиями:

• The various measures adopted are often said to be motivated by a desire to protect the interests of the depositor.

• In the recent period the timber has been increasingly considered to be an energy-carrier and an important chemical raw material.

• Extension of the application of numerical control in this area, however, is still considered to be proceeding relatively slow.

Примечание 2: Обратите особое внимание на перевод предложений, содержащих оборот Complex Subject, в которых сказуемое имеет отрицательную форму. При переводе на русский язык отрицательной становится форма, выраженная инфинитивом:

• The delegates did not happen to attend the last sitting. (Случилось так, что эти делегаты не присутствовали на последнем заседании.)

• You were not considered to be up to the job. (Посчитали, что вы не соответствуете данной должности/не подходите для этой работы.)

• The temperature lower than -273° is not known to exist. (Известно, что температур ниже -273 градусов не существует.)

Но:

• The Premier's speech is believed not to have aroused wide response.

• He is said not to have been in his office since last Tuesday.

• The subject seems not to have been researched.

• In this process, the manager is not required to make a major policy decision.
