PART I. ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY IN USE

ИМЯ СУЩЕСТВИТЕЛЬНОЕ (THE NOUN)

Имя существительное – часть речи, которая обозначает предмет и отвечает на вопросы: who is this? what is this?

Словообразование

По структуре имена существительные бывают простыми, производными и сложными (man – mankind – man-of-war). Основные способы словообразования: 1) конверсия (a look, a work, a rest); 2) словосложение (a lady-bird, a pen-friend, a forget-me-not); 3) аффиксация (unemploy men t, discover y, teach er, direct or, typ ist, histor ian, patriot ism, leader ship, independ ence, perform ance, revis ion, delega tion, happi ness, nat ure, brave ry, boy hood, activ ity, king dom, patron age, propos al, suspen sion).

Существительные в английском языке делятся на имена собственные и нарицательные. Нарицательные существительные обозначают однородные предметы (class-nouns), вещества (names of materials), отвлеченные понятия (abstract nouns). Имена собственные обозначают имена людей, названия мест, месяцев, дней недели, газет и т.д.

Исчисляемые и неисчисляемые существительные

(Countable and Uncountable Nouns)

Нарицательные существительные бывают исчисляемыми и неисчисляемыми. К исчисляемым относятся названия предметов, которые можно пересчитать. Они употребляются как в единственном, так и во множественном числе. I have an apple. He has several (two, enough, some, a few apples. C исчисляемыми существительными употребляются как неопределенный, так и определенный артикли: a ship, the ship, the ships.

К неисчисляемым существительным относятся названия предметов, которые нельзя пересчитать. Они употребляются только в единственном числе. There is much (little, a little) tea. К неисчисляемым, как правило, относятся: 1) абстрактные существительные (education, music, time, love); 2) вещественные существительные (cotton, hair, plastic, silk, glass, air, smoke, oxygen, dust, sand); 3) имена действия (деятельности) (cooking, farming, reading); 4) названия продуктов питания (chocolate, corn, fish, pasta, meat, milk, water, tea, sugar, salt); 5) существительные, обозначающие природные явления (cold, weather, rain, electricity, thunder); 6) существительные, образующие отдельную группу (advice, information, equipment, furniture, homework, jewelry, luggage, mail, money, news). Неисчисляемое существительное в функции подлежащего согласуется с глаголом в единственном числе. Местоимения, замещающие неисчисляемые существительные, также имеют форму единственного числа.

Как исчисляемые, так и неисчисляемые существительные бывают конкретными (вещественными) и абстрактными (отвлеченными). Некоторые вещественные существительные могут обозначать предметы из данного вещества. В этом случае они являются исчисляемыми. The house is made of brick. He carried two bricks in each hand.

В английском языке также выделяются существительные, обозначающие группы предметов или людей в их неразделимом единстве, так называемые собирательные существительные (the bourgeoisie, furniture).

Имена существительные обычно сопровождаются артиклями или другими определителями и часто сочетаются с предлогами: a computer, the students of my group, this classroom, our University, with pleasure.

(The Number)

Для образования множественного числа существует несколько способов.

1. Традиционным способом является прибавление -s к основе существительного: student – students, bag – bags, orange – oranges.

2. -es прибавляется к существительным, оканчивающимся на -s, -ss, -x, -ch, -sh: bus – buses, class – classes, brush – brushes, match – matches, fox – foxes.

3. -es прибавляется к существительным, оканчивающимся на -y с предшествующей согласной, причем -y меняется на –i: university – universities, party – parties. But: Kitty – Kittys.

4. -es прибавляется к существительным, оканчивающимся на -o: tomato – tomatoes, Negro – Negroes. But: radio – radios, cuckoo – cuckoos, piano – pianos, photo – photos, Eskimo – Eskimos. Некоторые существительные имеют двойной вариант окончания: cargo – cargos/cargoes, volcano – volcanos/volcanoes.

5. -es прибавляется к существительным, оканчивающимся на -f,/-fe,причем -f меняется на –v: wife – wives, shelf – shelves. But: proof – proofs, handkerchief – handkerchiefs, roof – roofs, cliff – cliffs, chief – chiefs, safe – safes.

6. Существительные латинского и греческого происхождения имеют специфические формы множественного числа: cact us – cact i, formul a – formul ae, curricul um – curricul a, ind ex – indi ces, bas is – bas es, phenomen on – phenomen a.

7. -en прибавляется к словам child – children, ox – oxen.

8. Формы множественного числа образуются путем изменения корневых гласных: man – men, woman – women, foot – feet, tooth – teeth, goose – geese, mouse – mice, penny – pence. But: German – Germans, penny – pennies.

9. Омонимичные формы множественного числа имеют существительные sheep – sheep, deer – deer, salmon – salmon, carp – carp, fish – fish, aircraft – aircraft, series – series, species – species, headquarters – headquarters, works – works, means – means, Chinese – Chinese, Swiss – Swiss.

Сложные существительные образуют формы множественного числа либо с начальной основой: passer-by – passers-by, mother-in-law – mothers-in-law, man-of-war – men-of –war; либо с финальной: grown-up – grown-ups, assistant director – assistant directors, merry-go-round – merry-go-rounds, Englishman – Englishmen. But: man-driver – men-drivers, woman-teacher – women-teachers.

Ряд существительных имеет только форму единственного числа: advice, news, money, information, hair, work, weather, knowledge, furniture, progress, ink, success, traffic, toast, luggage, permission.

(The Case)

Большинство существительных имеет один падеж, общий, не имеющий специальных окончаний. Падежные отношения часто передаются с помощью предлогов: The book of the teacher is on the table (род. пад.); I gave the book to Mike (дат. пад.); The book is written by the professor. I took the photos with my camera (тв. пад.); I am fond of reading about adventures. She spoke of art and music (предл. пад.).

Притяжательный падеж обозначает принадлежность и образуется присоединением апострофа и окончания ’s или апострофа к основе существительного.

1. ’s присоединяется к существительным в единственном числе: student’s book, mother’s bag, actress’s hat, boy-friend’s house, father-in-law’s car.

2. ’s присоединяется к именам собственным: John’s dictionary, Mike and Mary’s son, Charles the Second’s constitution, Burns’s / Burns’ poems, Britain’s policy, Russia’s riches, Moscow’s government, the Moon’s light.

3. ’s присоединяется к существительным во множественном числе, не оканчивающимся на -s: men’s magazine, women’s department, children’s toys.

4. присоединяется к существительным во множественном числе: students’ room, girls’ clothes.

Притяжательный падеж образуется с некоторыми неодушевленными существительными для выражения времени (six months’ work), расстояния (a mile’s way), стоимости (a pound’s worth), а также с наречиями (today’s news).
