He is a student of NAU. The teacher has just left. Give me some water, please. Have you got any friends?

When I entered the room I saw a man.

The man was a manager of this company.

Dogs like other animals have four legs.

Peter is my friend.

The capital of Ukraine is Kiev City.

Наприклад, назви морів, океанів і річок використовуються з означеним артиклем (the Sea of Azov, the Pacific, the Danube), а назви озер – без артикля (Blackwater Lake, Loch Ness, Baikal).

1) перед іменниками в однині в емфатичних конструкціях після слів what, such, rather, quite і т.д.: She is such a good pupil; what a good idea!;

2) з деякими словами: a lot, a few (кілька), a little (трохи), a bit (трохи) та ін. (He speaks English a little);

3) у значенні числівника one (один) перед числівниками hundred, thousand, million, dozen: The library has a hundred books. They have three meals a day.

а) порядковий числівник: He is the first to come;

б) прикметник у вищому ступені порівняння: This is the most beautiful flower;

в) один з прикметників last, next, same, following[†]: Answer the following questions;

2) з іменниками, що означають унікальні об’єкти: the earth, the sun, the moon, the world, the sky та ін.;

3) у виразах: in the afternoon, in the evening, in the morning, on the left, on the right, the other day та ін.;

4) у виразах типу “the more…, the better…”, наприклад: The more we learn, the more we know (чим більше ми вчимось, тим більше знаємо);

5) перед прізвищами, коли мається на увазі вся сім’я. У цьому разі прізвище ставиться у формі множини: The Browns (сім’я Браунів, Брауни);

6) перед назвами більшості газет і пароплавів: The Daily Mail, The Moscow News, The Guardian, The Titanic;

7) перед назвами народів (іменник у формі множини): the Ukrainians, the Americans;

8) перед прикметниками і дієприкметниками, які вживаються як іменники у формі множини: the English, the French, the poor, the unemployed;

9) перед назвами деяких країн: the US, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom;

10) перед назвами річок, гірських хребтів, півостровів, морів, океанів, архіпелагів: the Dnieper, the Thames, the Crimea, the Black Sea, the Atlantic Ocean;

Give me the bread, please.

The water is frozen. Але: Water is a liquid;

The rose is a beautiful flower.

1) перед званнями, якщо за ними йде прізвище: Professor Snow, Mister Pollit;

2) перед назвами міст, вулиць, площ: London, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street. Але: The Hague;

3) перед назвами місяців, днів, пір року: in April, on Wednesday, in summer. Але якщо мова йде про частину певного року, означений артикль вживається: in the winter of 1992;

4) перед абстрактними та речовинними іменниками, які вживаються в загальному значенні: freedom, metal;

5) перед власними іменами: Victor, Kovalenko, Webster;

6) перед назвами країн, міст, географічних місцевостей: Canada, London, Africa та ін. (виняток див. п. 9 для означеного артикля);

7) перед словами: breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, вжитими в загальному значенні: We have breakfast at 8 o’clock;

8) у деяких виразах: at night, by tram, (train, plane та ін.), from morning till night, to go to bed, day after day, by heart, at home та ін;

а) вказівні займенники (this, that) – замість артикля the:

This computer is very fast.

Those books are mine.

Her sister is going to get married.

Tom’s mother lives in California.

в) поруч з some та any,інші неозначені займенники, такі як much, many, little, few,each, every, either, neither:

There were many friends at the party.

Every child knows this.

Take either ticket, I don’t mind which.

Exercise 1. Read and translate the text. Find unknown words in your dictionaries.

The history of aviation is a long one-starting in the days of mythology and continuing on into today. As aviation grew from sport to industry, it was initially self-governing and learned primarily through trial and error. As the industry grew, airlines realized that without outside regulation, the industry would become unsafe. Government now controls the designs, manufacturing, and maintenance of the entire industry. Additionally special governmental programs and organizations provide the requirements for the certification of airlines, pilots, mechanics, and other personnel who have direct influence on the safe operation of the aircraft.

In controlling the manufacturing and design aspects of the industry, quality standards have developed to standardize the requirements. Initially, these quality standards came in the form of military standards that were issued by military departments in procuring their equipment. Later, civil manufacturing units took over these same standards as their own. In an effort to standardize quality systems on a global scale, the International Organization for Standardization developed the ISO 9000 series. The international quality standards provide the tool upon which a globally standardized system can be built.

Exercise 2. Translate the previous text in writing.
