A Laconic Answer

Once a foreign king came to Laconia.

He had a great army. He sent a man with a letter to a king of Laconia. In his letter he wrote, «Your soldiers are brave, but you have very few of them; my army is so strong that you will fright. If you try to fight it, you will die; if I win, I will kill your soldiers; if I will break up everything in your cities and towns; if I win I will make every women and every child my slaves».

The Laconians sent him the answer. There was only one word in it: «If».
