And this is bow Thorin began.

“Gandalf, dwarves and Mr. Baggins! We are not together in the house of our friend and fellow conspirator, this most excellent and audacious hobbit — may the hair on his toes never fall out! all praise to his wine and ale! —“

He paused for breath and for a polite remark from the hobbit, but the compliments were quite lost on poor Bilbo Baggins, who was wagging his mouth in protest at being called audacious and worst of all fellow conspirator, though no noise came out, he was so flummoxed. So Thorin went on:

“We are met to discuss our plans, our ways, means, policy and devices. We shall soon before the break of day start on our long journey, a journey from which some of us, or perhaps all of us (except our friend and counsellor, the ingenious wizard Gandalf) may never return. It is a solemn moment. Our object is, I take it, well known to us all. To the estimable Mr. Baggins, and perhaps to one or two of the younger dwarves (I think I should be right in naming Kili and Fili, for instance), the exact situation at the moment may require a little brief explanation —“

This was Thorin’s style (вот такой стиль был у Торина). He was an important dwarf (он был важный гном). If he had been allowed (если бы ему позволили), he would probably have gone on like this (он, возможно, продолжал бы в таком духе) until he was out of breath (до тех пор, пока он совсем бы не запыхался: «задохнулся»), without telling anyone there (не говоря никому из собравшихся: «там») anything that was not known already (ничего, что не было уже до этого известно). But he was rudely interrupted (но его грубо прервали: «он был грубо прерван»). Poor Bilbo couldn’t bear it any longer (бедный Бильбо не мог этого больше выносить; long — долго, длительно). At may never return (при /фразе/ "могут никогда не вернуться") he began to feel (он начал чувствовать, что) a shriek coming up inside (пронзительный крик поднимается к горлу: «вверх» внутри него), and very soon it burst out (и что очень скоро он вырвался наружу; to burst — взрываться, лопаться) like the whistle of an engine (как гудок: «свисток» паровоза) coming out of a tunnel (выходящего из туннеля). All the dwarves sprang on (все гномы вскочили с мест) knocking over the table (опрокинув стол). Gandalf struck a blue light (Гэндальф зажег синий свет; to strike (stuck, stricken) — ударять, бить) on the end of his magic staff (на конце своего волшебного посоха), and in its firework glare (и в его переливающимся: «как у фейерверка» ослепительном блеске) the poor little hobbit could be seen (можно было увидеть бедного маленького хоббита) kneeling on the hearth-rug (стоящего на коленях, на коврике перед камином), shaking like a jelly that was melting (трясясь словно желе, которое тает). Then he fell flat on the floor (затем он упал плашмя на пол), and kept on calling out (и продолжал выкрикивать) “struck by lightning (молния ударила), struck by lightning (молния ударила)!” over and over again (одно и тоже снова и снова); and that was all (и это было все, чего) they could get out of him (они могли добиться от него; to get smth. out of smb. — выведывать, выспрашивать) for a long time (долгое время). So they took him (и тогда они взяли его) and laid him out of the way (и уложили его, чтобы не мешал: «с дороги») on the drawing-room sofa (на диван в гостиной) with a drink at his elbow (/поставили/ стаканчик напитка под рукой; elbow — локоть), and they went back to their dark business (и они вернулись назад, к своему темному делу).

This was Thorin’s style. He was an important dwarf. If he had been allowed, he would probably have gone on like this until he was out of breath, without telling any one there anything that was not known already. But he was rudely interrupted. Poor Bilbo couldn’t bear it any longer. At may never return he began to feel a shriek coming up inside, and very soon it burst out like the whistle of an engine coming out of a tunnel. All the dwarves sprang on knocking over the table. Gandalf struck a blue light on the end of his magic staff, and in its firework glare the poor little hobbit could be seen kneeling on the hearth-rug, shaking like a jelly that was melting. Then he fell flat on the floor, and kept on calling out “struck by lightning, struck by lightning!” over and over again; and that was all they could get out of him for a long time. So they took him and laid him out of the way on the drawing-room sofa with a drink at his elbow, and they went back to their dark business.

“Excitable little fellow (легко возбудимый паренек: «малыш»),” said Gandalf, as they sat down again (сказал Гэндальф, когда они снова расселись). “Gets funny queer fits (случаются забавные странные припадки), but he is one of the best (но он — один из самых лучших), one of the best (один из самых лучших) — as fierce as a dragon in a pinch (такой же свирепый, как дракон в трудную минуту; pinch — щипок; тяготы, чрезвычайные обстоятельства).”

If you have ever seen a dragon in a pinch (если вы когда-нибудь видели дракона в трудную минуту), you will realise (то вы ясно представите себе) that this was only poetical exaggeration (что это было лишь поэтическое преувеличение) applied to any hobbit (применительно к любому хоббиту), even to Old Took’s great-granduncle Bullroarer (даже к прадядюшке Старого Тука /по имени/ Трещотка; bull — бык; roarer — горлопан, крикун), who was so huge (который был такой огромный) (for a hobbit (для хоббита)) that he could ride a horse (что мог ездить верхом на лошади). He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram (он набросился на шеренги гоблинов из Маунт-Грэма; to charge — нагружать, обременять; /воен./ атаковать) in the Battle of the Green Fields (в Битве на Зеленых Полях), and knocked their king Golfimbul’s head (и сшиб голову их короля Гольфимбуля) clean off (подчистую) with a wooden club (деревянной дубинкой). It sailed a hundred yards through the air (она пролетела сотню ярдов по воздуху; to sail — плыть /под парусом/, парить) and went down a rabbit hole (и опустилась в кроличью нору), and in this way the battle was won (и таким образом эта битва была выиграна; to win — выигрывать) and the game of Golf invented (и игра в Гольф была изобретена) at the same moment (в тот же самый момент).

excitable [Ik'saItqb(q)l] exaggeration [IgzxdZq'reIS(q)n] invent [In'vent]

“Excitable little fellow,” said Gandalf, as they sat down again. “Gets funny queer fits, but he is one of the best, one of the best — as fierce as a dragon in a pinch.”

If you have ever seen a dragon in a pinch, you will realise that this was only poetical exaggeration applied to any hobbit, even to Old Took’s great-granduncle Bullroarer, who was so huge (for a hobbit) that he could ride a horse. He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields, and knocked their king Golfimbul’s head clean off with a wooden club. It sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit hole, and in this way the battle was won and the game of Golf invented at the same moment.

In the meanwhile, however (тем временем, однако), Bullroarer’s gentler descendant (более кроткий потомок Трещотки) was reviving in the drawing-room (приходил в себя в гостиной). After a while and a drink (спустя какое-то время, и /выпив/ стаканчик) he crept nervously (он нервозно прокрался) to the door of the parlour (к двери небольшого зала). This is what he heard (и вот что он услышал), Gloin speaking (говорил Глойн):

“Humph (хм)!” (or some snort (или другое какое фырканье) more or less like that (более или менее похожее на это)). “Will he do, do you think (подойдет ли он, как вы думаете)? It is all very well for Gandalf to talk (легко Гэндальфу говорить; it's all very well — это все очень хорошо = /ирон./ легко сказать) about this hobbit being fierce (о том, что этот хоббит свирепый), but one shriek like that (но одного пронзительного крика, подобного этому) in a moment of excitement (в момент возбуждения) would be enough (будет достаточно) to wake the dragon (чтобы разбудить дракона) and all his relatives (и всех его сородичей: «родственников»), and kill the lot of us (и убить всех нас скопом). I think (мне кажется) it sounded more like fright (он звучал больше как /крик/ испуга) than excitement (а не возбуждения)! In fact (на самом-то деле), if it had not been for the sign on the door (если бы не тот самый знак на двери), I should have been sure (я был бы полностью уверен) we had come to the wrong house (что мы пришли в не тот дом; wrong — неправильный, ошибочный). As soon as I clapped eyes on the little fellow (как только я увидел этого коротышку: «малыша»; to clap — хлопать) bobbing and puffing on the mat (подпрыгивающего и пыхтящего на коврике /у двери/), I had my doubts (я засомневался: «имел свои сомнения»). He looks more like a grocer (он больше похож: «выглядит как» на бакалейщика) — than a burglar (чем на ночного грабителя)!”

In the meanwhile, however, Bullroarer’s gentler descendant was reviving in the drawing-room. After a while and a drink he crept nervously to the door of the parlour. This is what he heard, Gloin speaking:

“Humph!” (or some snort more or less like that). “Will he do, do you think? It is all very well for Gandalf to talk about this hobbit being fierce, but one shriek like that in a moment of excitement would be enough to wake the dragon and all his relatives, and kill the lot of us. I think it sounded more like fright than excitement! In fact, if it bad not been for the sign on the door, I should have been sure we had come to the wrong house. As soon as I clapped eyes on the little fellow bobbing and puffing on the mat, I had my doubts. He looks more like a grocer than a burglar!”

Then Mr. Baggins turned the handle and went in (тогда-то мистер Бэггинс повернул ручку /двери/ и вошел). The Took side had won (порода Тука одержала победу; side — сторона). He suddenly felt (он внезапно почувствовал) he would go without bed and breakfast (что он обойдется без сна и еды: «кровати и завтрака») to be thought fierce (чтобы о нем думали, как о свирепом). As for little fellow bobbing on the mat (что же касается /фразы о/ коротышке, прыгающем на коврике) it almost made him really fierce (то она почти что сделала его на самом деле свирепым = разгневала его). Many a time afterwards (много раз в последствии) the Baggins part (Бэггинсова часть /хоббита/) regretted what he did now (пожалела о том, что он сделал сейчас), and he said to himself (и он говорил себе): “Bilbo, you were a fool (Бильбо, ты был дураком); you walked right in (ты вошел прямо в /это дело/) and put your foot in it (и сам же сел в калошу; to put one's foot in /into/ it — сплоховать, попасть впросак: «сунуть свою ногу в это»).”

“Pardon me (извините),” he said, “if I have overheard (если я нечаянно подслушал) words that you were saying (слова, которые вы говорили). I don’t pretend to understand (я не делаю вид, будто понимаю) what you are talking about (о чем вы говорите), or your reference to burglars (или о вашем упоминании о ночных грабителях), but I think (но я думаю) I am right in believing (что я прав, полагая; to believe — верить, доверять)” (this is what he called (это было то, что он называл) being on his dignity (вести себя с достоинством)) “that you think (что вы считаете) I am no good (меня ни на что не годным). I will show you (я вам покажу). I have no signs on my door (у меня нет никаких знаков на двери), it was painted a week ago (она была покрашена неделю назад), and I am quite sure (и я совершенно уверен) you have come to the wrong house (что вы пришли не в тот дом: «в неправильный дом»). As soon as I saw your funny faces (как только я увидел ваши забавные физиономии; soon — скоро, рано) on the door-step (на пороге), I had my doubts (я засомневался). But treat it as the right one (но считайте, что это тот дом; right — правильный). Tell me what you want done (скажите мне, что вы хотите, чтобы было сделано), and I will try it (и я попытаюсь), if I have to walk (/даже/ если я должен буду пройти) from here to the East of East (от сюда до самого Восточного Востока) and fight the wild Were-worms (и сражаться с дикими Оборотнями: «людьми-змеями»; worm — червяк; /арх./ дракон) in the Last Desert (в Крайней Пустыне; last — последний). I had a great-great-great-granduncle once (был у меня когда-то давно двоюродный пра-пра-пра-дедушка; uncle — дядя), Bullroarer Took (Трещотка «Бычий Рев» Тук), and (и) —“

Then Mr. Baggins turned the handle and went in. The Took side had won. He suddenly felt he would go without bed and breakfast to be thought fierce. As for little fellow bobbing on the mat it almost made him really fierce. Many a time afterwards the Baggins part regretted what he did now, and he said to himself: “Bilbo, you were a fool; you walked right in and put your foot in it.”

“Pardon me,” he said, “if I have overheard words that you were saying. I don’t pretend to understand what you are talking about, or your reference to burglars, but I think I am right in believing” (this is what he called being on his dignity) “that you think I am no good. I bad a great-great-great-granduncle once, Bullroarer Took, and —“

“Yes, yes, but that was long ago (да, да, но это было очень давно),” said Gloin (сказал Глойн). “I was talking about you (я говорил о вас). And I assure you (и я уверяю вас, что) there is a mark on this door (на этой двери есть отметина) — the usual one in the trade (обычный /знак/ в этом деле; trade — занятие, ремесло, профессия), or used to be (или раньше был /обычным/). Burglar wants a good job (ночной взломщик ищет хорошую работу; to want — хотеть, нуждаться), plenty of Excitement (со множеством опасностей: «возбуждений») and reasonable Reward (и приемлемым вознаграждением; reasonable — разумный, обоснованный), that’s how it is usually read (вот как он обычно читается). You can say (вы можете сказать) Expert Treasure-hunter (опытный охотник за сокровищами) instead of Burglar (вместо взломщика) if you like (если вам /так больше/ нравится). Some of them do (некоторым из них нравится). It’s all the same to us (нам все равно; same — так же, таким же образом). Gandalf told us (Гэндальф сказал нам) that there was a man of the sort (что есть здесь человек данной профессии: «этого сорта») in these parts (в этих краях) looking for a Job at once (ищущий Работу и немедленно), and that he had arranged for a meeting (и что он договорился о встрече) here this Wednesday tea-time (здесь, в эту среду, во время вечернего чая).”

“Yes, yes, but that was long ago,” said Gloin. “I was talking about you. And I assure you there is a mark on this door — the usual one in the trade, or used to be. Burglar wants a good job, plenty of Excitement and reasonable Reward, that’s how it is usually read. You can say Expert Treasure-hunter instead of Burglar if you like. Some of them do. It’s all the same to us. Gandalf told us that there was a man of the sort in these parts looking for a Job at once, and that he had arranged for a meeting here this Wednesday tea-time.”

“Of course there is a mark (конечно здесь есть знак),” said Gandalf. “I put it there myself (я сам его там нанес). For very good reasons (из самых лучших побуждений; reason — причина, основание). You asked me (вы попросили меня) to find the fourteenth man for your expedition (найти четырнадцатого человека для вашей экспедиции), and I chose Mr. Baggins (и я выбрал мистера Бэггинса). Just let any one say (пусть лишь один из вас скажет) I chose the wrong man (что я выбрал не того человека) or the wrong house (или не тот дом), and you can stop at thirteen (и вы можете оставаться в количестве тринадцати /гномов/) and have all the bad luck you like (и испытать все несчастья, которые вы только захотите; bad luck — неудача, невезение), or go back to digging coal (или вернуться /к своим занятиям/ и /снова/ копать уголь).”

He scowled so angrily at Gloin (он так сердито нахмурил брови, посмотрев на Глойна) that the dwarf huddled back in his chair (что гном съежился на своем стуле); and when Bilbo tried to open his mouth (и когда Бильбо попытался открыть свой рот) to ask a question (чтобы задать вопрос; to ask — спрашивать), he turned and frowned at him (он обернулся и хмуро взглянул на него) and stuck out his bushy eyebrows (и сдвинул: «выставил вперед» свои кустистые брови), till Bilbo shut his mouth tight (пока Бильбо /не/ закрыл плотно свой рот) with a snap (с щелчком).

“That’s right (так-то лучше: «правильно»),” said Gandalf. “Let’s have no more argument (давайте больше не будем спорить; argument — довод, аргумент, дискуссия). I have chosen Mr. Baggins (я выбрал мистера Бэггинса) and that ought to be enough (и этого должно быть достаточно) for all of you (для всех вас). If I say he is a Burglar (если я говорю, что он Взломщик), a Burglar he is (значит Взломщик он и есть), or will be (или будет им) when the time comes (когда придет время). There is a lot more in him (в нем есть гораздо больше чего) than you guess (чем вы можете предполагать), and a deal more (и значительно больше; deal — некоторое количество, часть, масса) than he has any idea of himself (чем он сам о себе самом имеет представление). You may (вы все) (possibly (возможно)) all live to thank me yet (еще об этом благодарить меня будете). Now Bilbo, my boy (теперь Бильбо, мой мальчик), fetch the lamp (сходи и принеси лампу), and let’s have little light on this (и давайте прольем немного света на /все/ это)!”

“Of course there is a mark,” said Gandalf. “I put it there myself. For very good reasons. You asked me to find the fourteenth man for your expedition, and I chose Mr. Baggins. Just let any one say I chose the wrong man or the wrong house, and you can stop at thirteen and have all the bad luck you like, or go back to digging coal.”

He scowled so angrily at Gloin that the dwarf huddled back in his chair; and when Bilbo tried to open his mouth to ask a question, he turned and frowned at him and stuck oat his bushy eyebrows, till Bilbo shut his mouth tight with a snap. “That’s right,” said Gandalf. “Let’s have no more argument. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all live to thank me yet. Now Bilbo, my boy, fetch the lamp, and let’s have little light on this!”

On the table (на столе) in the light of a big lamp (в свете большой лампы) with a red shade (с красным абажуром; shade — тень, полумрак; экран) he spread a piece of parchment (он разложил кусок пергамента) rather like a map (довольно-таки похожий на карту).

“This was made by Thror (это было сделано Трором), your grandfather, Thorin (вашим дедом, Торин), he said in answer (сказал он в ответ) to the dwarves’ excited questions (на взволнованные вопросы гномов). “It is a plan of the Mountain (это план Горы).”

“I don’t see (я не вижу) that this will help us much (как это сможет нам сильно: «много» помочь),” said Thorin disappointedly (сказал Торин разочарованно; to disappoint — разочаровывать) after a glance (после взгляда /на карту/). “I remember the Mountain well enough (я помню Гору достаточно хорошо) and the lands about it (и земли вокруг нее). And I know where Mirkwood is (и я знаю, где Мрачный Лес расположен; mirk = murk — мрак, темнота), and the Withered Heath (и Иссохшая Пустошь) where the great dragons bred (где огромные драконы водились; to breed (bred) — размножаться, плодиться).”

“There is a dragon (тут и есть дракон) marked in red (отмечен красным) on the Mountain (на Горе), said Balin, “but it will be easy enough (но это будет достаточно просто) to find him without that (найти его и без этого), if ever we arrive there (если мы когда-нибудь доберемся туда).”

“There is one point (есть здесь одна отметина; point — точка, след, место) that you haven’t noticed (которую вы не заметили),” said the wizard (сказал волшебник), “and that is the secret entrance (и это — секретный вход). You see that rune (вы видите ту руну) on the West side (на Западной стороне), and the hand pointing to it (и руку, указующую на нее) from the other runes (с других рун)? That marks a hidden passage (она обозначает скрытый проход; to hide — прятать) to the Lower Halls (к Нижним Чертогам).
