TRANSLATION

When Śiśupāla was thus killed, a great roar and howl went up from the crowd. Taking advantage of that disturbance, the few kings who were supporters of Śiśupāla quickly left the assembly out of fear for their lives.

caidya-dehotthitaṁ jyotir vāsudevam upāviśat

paśyatāṁ sarva-bhūtānām ulkeva bhuvi khāc cyutā

TRANSLATION

An effulgent light rose from Śiśupāla’s body and, as everyone watched, entered Lord Kṛṣṇa just like a meteor falling from the sky to the earth.

COMMENTARY

That effulgent light, containing the eternal spiritual body within it, rose in the sky all the way up to Vaikuṇṭha. After appreciating the non-difference of Vaikuṇṭha-nātha and Śrī Kṛṣṇa, it again merged with Kṛṣṇa, like a comet falling from the sky. Śiśupāla remained within Kṛṣṇa until the end of the Lord’s earthly pastimes at Prabhāsa-kṣetra, and then returned to the side of his master, the Supreme Lord of Vaikuṇṭha. The popular view however is that Śiśupāla achieved impersonal liberation by merging into Kṛṣṇa’s bodily effulgence (sāyujya-mukti).

janma-trayānuguṇita-vaira-saṁrabdhayā dhiyā

dhyāyaṁs tan-mayatāṁ yāto bhāvo hi bhava-kāraṇam

TRANSLATION

Obsessed with hatred of Lord Kṛṣṇa throughout three lifetimes, Śiśupāla attained the Lord’s transcendental nature. Indeed, one’s consciousness determines one’s future birth.

COMMENTARY

This verse answers the question, “How could such a blasphemer enter into Lord Vāsudeva?” By absorbing his thoughts in enmity of the Lord for three births, Śiśupāla attained a similar form as the Lord. This means that he regained his position as a personal asso-ciate of the Lord in Vaikuṇṭha. The reason is given: one’s thoughts (bhāvaḥ) are the cause of attaining (bhava-kāraṇam) the next body. In this connection, the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (SB 7.1.47) states:

vairānubandha-tīvreṇa dhyānenācyuta-sātmatām

nītau punar hareḥ pārśvaṁ jagmatur viṣṇu-pārṣadau

 

“These two associates of Lord Viṣṇu—Jaya and Vijaya—maintained a feeling of enmity for a very long time. Because of always thinking of Kṛṣṇa in this way, they regained the shelter of the Lord, having returned home, back to Godhead.”

ṛtvigbhyaḥ sa-sadasyebhyo dakṣināṁ vipulām adāt

sarvān sampūjya vidhi-vac cakre ’vabhṛtham eka-rāṭ
