Global Warming and Climate Change

Heat from the sun is held in the Earth’s atmosphere by natural greenhouse gases. These kept the planet warm and without them the average temperature would be about –18 °C instead of +14 °C. However, more and more heat is being kept in the atmosphere because of man-made greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), which is produced by burning oil, gas, coal. This global warming is already causing changes in the weather all over the world.

Since the 1970s, average global temperatures have risen by about 0.6 °C and many scientists believe that more extreme weather conditions have been caused by climate change in recent years. For example, New Orleans was hit by a huge hurricane in 2005. Many people were killed and thousands were made homeless. And in the summer of 2003, 15000 people in France died as a result of a heat wave.

Experts believe that more and more places are going to be affected by climate change in the future. And as the ice caps at the North and South Poles melt and sea levels rise further, many towns and villages near the coast will be flooded. This is frightening thought because more than half the world’s population live near the coast.

A lot has been written about what governments and business should do to slow down global warming. However, there’s also a lot we can do to save energy at home. For example, always turn off TVs, DVD players and computers – machines use 70 % as much electricity on stand-by as when they’re being used.

A) Work in pairs. Take turns to ask and answer questions. Surf the Internet for additional information and give reasons for your answer.

1. Do you think people take the problem of global warming seriously enough in our country?

2. What’s the best thing that a single person can do to help the environment?

3. Do you think children are taught enough about the environment in schools these days?

4. Do you think air travel should make more expensive to reduce the number of flights?

5. What will happen when we run out of oil and other natural resources?

b) Tell what your partner thinks about the future of the planet.

Describe the pictures using the words from the box and supporting questions.

1. What can you see in the picture?

2. Which city is it?

3. What problems does the city have?

4. Do you think it is the result of global warming?

5. What do you think of the future of the city?

6. What can be done to assist people in such situation?

Role-play the situations.

Situation 1

Student A lives in Siberia / south of Russia / Central part of Russia / Far East.

Student B asks him among others the following questions:

· what climate this part of Russia has;

· what weather they usually have in different seasons;

· if such weather is typical for that part;

· what climate she/he prefers and why.
