Exercise 5. You are going to read a short story about computer addicted boy. Try to predict what problems he will have.

Addiction

When Ermek was eight, he seemed to be very interested in computers. His parents knew that he would love to have one, but they couldn’t afford to buy one. His father decided to work extra hours to buy him a computer. By the time they bought him computer, Ermek was fourteen he had become very good at using his computer, but it was his only hobby. His parents wanted him to go out, but he didn’t want to. Nobody persuade him to do anything and nothing could make him turn his computer off.

His parents didn’t know what to do. Their son had become a computer addict. Even the family doctor didn’t know how to help. One morning Ermek’s mother found him lying on the floor. He had collapsed exhaustion. A fortnight in hospital finally made Ermek realize that his computer had become a dangerous obsession. Now Ermek is sixteen. He had lots of friends and hobbies. He hopes to study computer science at university and would like to find a job in computer research.

Exercise 6. Discuss in groups of two or three. What advice would you give to frequent computer user?

Exercise 7. Make a list of bad habits you think are unhealthy.

Exercise 8. Write about habits using your list from exercise 7.

You see that good habits will get you much better attention than bad habits. Write about your bad habits and how do you want to correct them.

Mass Media.

There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers. Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to entertain their readers. You can always find a paper which suits your interests.

The main source of news for millions of people is television. With its help we can see everything with our own eyes. It is the window on the world which gives us an opportunity to “travel” all over the world. TV helps us to relax after a hard day’s work and to escape from reality.

Many people prefer the radio. It is good to listen to it in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.

The Internet has recently become another important source of information. It is regarded as the latest addiction to trap thousands of people which has been blamed for broken relationships, job losses, financial ruin and even suicide. Psychologists now recognize Internet Addiction Syndrome (IAS) as a new illness that could cause serious problems and ruin many lives.

GRAMMAR COMMENT

Verb patterns

Sometimes in a sentence, one verb follows another. For example, I want to buy an electric car. The first verbis 'want', the second verbis 'buy'. In sentences like this, there are different possible patterns. For example: (a) I want to buyan electric car. (b) I hate driving. In sentence A, the first verb is followed by an infinitive. In sentence B, the first verb is followed by a gerund (-ing) form. The verb patterns are dependent upon the first verb. There are several different types of pattern. Here are examples of some of the patterns:

 

Verb+ infinitive Agree, decide, expect, fail, happen, hope, manage, mean, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, want Verb+ ing form Avoid, can’t face, can’t help, can’t stand, enjoy, fancy, feel like, imagine, spend (time), suggest
!!! Note that LIKE, LOVE, PREFER and HATE can be followed by the infinitive or the –ing form without changing meaning!!! I hate to get up early. I hate getting up early.
