Text: Food and meals We take, as a rule, three or four meals a day. The first meal is called breakfast. We have it at about 8 or 9 in the morning. In fact we begin our working day with it. The second meal is called lunch. We have it in the middle of the day. Those people, who work at factories, offices, plants etc. have a break for lunch which they take in dining-halls, refreshment rooms, etc. At about 4 or 5 in the afternoon people have their dinner. On Sundays we usually have dinner at 2 or 3 and tea at 4 or 5 o’clock. At about 8 or 9 o’clock we have supper. Breakfast usually consists of a cup of tea, coffee or milk and bread and butter. Bread and butter are never missing at breakfast. Some people also like porridge for breakfast. Lunch is usually a cold meal with cold meat, fish and potatoes or vegetables. Then come coffee or tea with some sandwich or roll. Dinner is a principal meal. To lay the table for dinner it is necessary to put a table-cloth on it, and three plates for each person – a deep plate, a shallow plate and a small plate for a cold dish. Then it is necessary to put the spoons and the knife to the right of
the plate and the fork to the left. As a rule a cold dish opens the dinner such as, for example, some kind of a vegetable salad. Then come some kind of soup. Then comes the second course which is usually meat or fish with potatoes or vegetables. Dessert comes to end up the meal. All kinds of fruit make a very good dessert. So at home we usually have a dinner of three or four courses. Most people never have supper because they don’t want to eat much before going to bed. If they are hungry late in the evening, they take a small slice of bread and butter and a cup of tea. Text: Eat to be healthy! Our eating habits affect how we feel during the day. What happens if I have no breakfast, or poor breakfast? I’m likely to be tired or cross, and, of course, hungry till having lunch. There is a ring of truth in that well-known saying: “A man is what he eats”. Food is a form of fuel. It gives us energy, helps us to grow, resist disease and form strong teeth and bones. No single food can take care of all body’s needs. Different foods do different things for the body. Some foods are better than others in helping make strong muscles. Among them are meats, eggs, fish, and poultry. Some foods are better than others in helping keep bones, teeth, skin, and blood healthy. Among these foods are fruit, vegetables, milk, and cheese. There are certain sayings about foods from long ago. “Fish is “brain” food”; people say it’s good for brain. They say carrots are good for eyes. Another saying is: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, - meaning that you will be healthy if you eat an apple a day. There are so many kinds of food – fast food, snacks, junk food – that it may be difficult to follow a healthy diet. Fresh fruit and vegetables are important for a healthy diet. In the past, the sailors who went on long sea voyages stayed on their ships for many months without going ashore. They didn’t get fresh food and so often suffered from a disease called scurvy. Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C, which is found in fruit and vegetables. In our country, bread is an important part of our everyday food. When we sit down for a meal, there is always bread on the table. For breakfast, we have bread with butter or cheese. Some people have jam or olives. For lunch, we have bread with a meat or vegetable dish. Again at dinner, we eat bread whatever food there is on the table. When there is rice or potatoes, we have bread, too. My granny says that if there is no bread, there is no food. Vocabulary habit - әдет to be cross - ренжу a ring of truth - шынайы fuel - отын to resist disease - ауруға қарсы тұру muscles - бұлшықеттер poultry - құс еті skin - тері blood - қан certain - кейбір brain - ми

Text: Me and my family My sister takes after my mum, but people say I take after my dad. He’s a travel consultant and he’s got his own business. He’s always nice and friendly. My mother shows her feelings more. She works as a barmaid in a wine bar and she’s quite attractive. She’s got dark hair and a nice face with dark brown eyes. Kate is funny and a bit different. She changes the way she dresses every week. I am not very interested in fashion – I like my jeans and old clothes. Kate lives and works in a lot of different countries. I stayed with her in New York when we were doing a job together. We went shopping and everyone knew her because there were posters of her everywhere. Somebody from a model agency saw Kate at JFK airport in New York when she was 14 or 15. We were coming back from a holiday in Florida with dad and a woman said, “Do you want to come down to the model agency?” Kate had never thought about modeling before that – she was just a normal girl then. When we were young we had fights about silly little things. It was fantastic! She sometimes hit me so I ripped up her posters and threw her clothes on the floor. My parents are divorced but they get on quite well. I live with my dad but my mum lives very near and I see her about three times a week. I get on brilliantly with my dad – we can talk about everything. He’s very easygoing and not strict, but he keeps me under control. Kate loves modeling. If you are a woman you can earn a lot of money, but the job is nоt so good for men. I enjoy modeling, but I would prefer to play football professionally or manage a hotel. I suppose I’m quite ambitious – I want to succeed.

Text: My working day On week days the alarm-clock wakes me up and my working day begins. It is seven o’clock. If it is spring or summer I jump out of bed, run to the window and open it wide to let the fresh morning air in. In winter I am not so quick to leave my bed, and I bury my head under the pillows pretending not to hear the alarm-clock. But all the same, it is time to get up and I start getting ready for my work. I make my bed and go to the bathroom where I brush my teeth and have a shower. While I am having breakfast, I turn on me tape-recorder and listen to pop-music. Breakfast, as my parents say, must be the most substantial meal of the day. But usually neither my mother nor I have any time to cook it, so I just have a cup of tea or coffee and some sandwiches. I leave my house at ten minutes to eight, and, as I live quite near the bus stop, I am there in five minutes. It takes me about twenty minutes to get to University. I arrive at University at a quarter past eight. On my way to University I often meet my group-mates and we go to University together. Our lessons start at eight. We usually have seven or even eight lessons a day. It is not easy to study at our University, but it is reputed to be the best in our region. My working day is not over even when the lessons come to the end, because I have a lot of work to do at home. It usually takes me about three hours to get ready for the next working day. But when at last my working day is over I feel both tired and satisfied. Sometimes in the evening my friends come to my place and we talk or play; sometimes we go for a walk, but not very often. I go to bed at about eleven o ‘clock.

Text: Why we study English I am a first - year student of an art institute. I study English because I want to read and to understand English books. English is difficult for me but I like it and work hard at it. My sister learns English too and she knows it well. She is a third-year student of the Institute of Foreign Languages. She reads, translates and speaks English well. She is one of the best students of the faculty. She works hard because she wants to master English and to become a translator. My sister is also fond of English literature. She reads a lot of books. As a rule she reads two or three books a month. Every day in the evening she reads a few pages of some English books. As she knows English well she reads books in the original. She doesn’t read adapted books. As for me I read only adapted books because I am a beginner. We have a lot of recorded tapes at home and my sister often listens to them. I listen to them too, but I do not always understand all. I am only a beginner and those tapes are difficult for me. My sister helps me to understand them. There are people who know three, four, five or six languages. They are polyglots. Linguistics is not my specialty or hobby and I am not going to become a polyglot, but I want to master English because to know a foreign language is absolutely necessary for a specialist – an engineer, an artist, a doctor or an architect.

Text: Clothes sense Thefirst impression we make almost fully depends on what we wear and how we wear it. Manners and speech are noticed next and character only later. So to “present” yourself skillfully is a talent. It’s helpful to have some “clothes sense” to know and feel the types of things that are your style. Clothes add to your appearance, so to be a little bit different from the rest you should adapt the fashion to your personality. These days, many people don’t think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts they can put on what they like – from elegant suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy. But sometimes it is important to wear the right thing. In offices business people wear quite formal clothes. Men usually wear suits and ties, jeans and shirts are not allowed. Some men don’t feel comfortable with a woman colleague wearing pants, so for women it is more sensible to put on dresses and skirts. When we are not sure what to wear, we simply watch what other people do and then do the same or ask the advice of our friends.

Can you name a satiation when it is important to wear the right clothes?
II. Translate the following into English. 1. Text: My leisure time
There’s plenty to do after school hours, particularly sport which I enjoy most. My favorite sport is hockey. Almost all my friends are here. We train hard and we play for the school and in various regional youth tournaments. As most young people I spend my after school hours at home watching TV, or doing domestic chores, or listening music, or reading. We don’t have computer at home, so I spend a considerable time playing computer games at my friend’s. Of course, all these I do when there are no training spells. I think, it’s common with most young people to spend some time outdoors. Street life is important for us. We meet somewhere in streets and talk and then go to town centre to do window shopping and ‘see what’s going on’. My friends use some of their spare time to earn money by working in different places. Some of them wash cars for people; others do a part-time job for shops and cafes. As for me I earn my pocket money delivering newspapers three times a week. I’ve usually got enough to do the things I want. I can buy the records and CDs I want without asking the permission from my parents.
