THE WEEKEND

Most people in Britain work a five-day week, from Monday to Friday. Schools, colleges and universities are closed on Saturday and Sunday. So, from Friday evening till Monday morning people are usually free.

People look forward to the weekend and when Friday comes, they say to each other when they leave work 'Have a nice weekend'.

Students, young people who work away from home and people who are not married like to go away for the weekend. They may go home to stay with their relatives or friends in different parts of the country or stay at a hotel in the country or at the se aside. It is more difficult for married people with children to go away for the weekend.

Those who stay at home at the weekend try to have a good time, too, and to do some work about the house.

Saturday morning is a very busy time for shopping as this is the only day when people who are at work on weekdays can go shopping all day long. At weekends shops close between 5.30 and 6.00 p.m. and they are closed all day on Sunday. On Saturday the shops in the centre of big cities usually close at 1.00 p.m.

On Saturday afternoons the most important sports events take place - football, tennis and others. Some men go and watch, others sit and watch the sport programmes on TV.

Saturday evening is the favourite time for parties, dances, going to the cinema or the theatre, in fact for 'going out'.

On Sunday mid-mornings most British people indulge in some fairly light activities such as gardening, washing the car, shelling peas for Sunday lunch, or taking the dog for a walk. Another most popular pre-lunch activity consists of a visit to a 'pub' - either a walk to the 'local', or often nowadays a drive to a more pleasant 'country pub'. The national drink in England is beer, and the 'pub', where Englishmen go to drink to, is a peculiarly English institution.

Reading. Text.

The Baxters go shopping.

The other day my wife took me on a usual shopping round. In fact I hate going to the butcher's, grocer's and other shops of this sort but of course I have to help my wife about the house.

First we bought some pork and beer at the butcher's. Then we dropped in at the grocery and greengrocery. Jill wanted to buy sugar, salt, tomatoes and cucumbers. We also called at the baker's where we bought a loaf of brown bread, some buns and biscuits.

On our way home we were passing Selfridge's. "Let's drop in here for a while. You need a suit for everyday wear", my wife said. 1 agreed.

Selfridge's is still one of the biggest and most popular stores in London. They sell everything here. All the things for sale are on the counters. The customers walk round and choose what they want. The store has several departments: women's clothes, men's clothes, shoes, toys, sports goods, umbrellas, leather goods, china and glass, food and so on.

When we entered the shop we went straight to the men's department. A salesgirl showed us a number of suits but we didn't like any of them. One of them was a bit loose on me, another was to tight. As to the third our opinions were quite different. I liked the suit. My wife found it too expensive. She wanted a suit as good as that one but less expensive. The salesgirl showed us a cheaper suit. It was of good quality but I didn't like the style. We were about to leave the counter when they delivered a new selection of goods. They were not only suit but different kinds of clothes: coats, raincoats, shirts, jackets and trousers. I tried on two or three suits. The last was all right. It was just my size and fitted me perfectly. We both liked the suit and the price was not high. "We'll take it, wrap it up, please!" I said to the salesgirl.

After we left the men's department my wife spent the rest of the morning trying on hats. She wanted a pink straw hat to match one of her summer frocks. There was such a good selection of hats in the shop that in the end Jill bought two.

pork –шошқаның еті

bun —булочка china - фарфор

deliver – алып келу, табыстау

a pink straw - солома
