ERNST МАСИ (1838-1916)

1. Ernst Mach, an Austrian physicist, was born on the 18th February 1838 in Turas, Moravia (Czechoslovakia). He was the son of a school -teacher who moved with his family to Vienna white Ernst was still a baby. His training was in physics, and he obtained his doctor's degree in that subject at the University or Vienna in 1895.

2. However, he was strongly influenced by psychophysics and became a philosopher of science. He elaborated the notion that all knowledge was a matter of sensation. Mach's philosophy was not greeted with any enthusiasm in his time.

3. Mach is best known now for his experiments on airflow, in which he was the first to take note of the sudden change in the nature of the airflow over a moving object as it reaches the speed of sound. Consequently, the speed or sound in air, under given conditions of temperature, is called Mach 1. Twee the speed of sound is Mach 2, and so on. After the war, planes approached the speed of sound (740 miles an hour) or Mach 1. In the age of supersonic air travel, Mach numbers (a phrase first used in 1925) fill the public prints.

4. Ernst Mach died in Germany, on the 19th of February, 1916.

FRANKLIN AND JEFFERSON

1. Many leaders of America's struggle for independence from Britain were strongly influenced by Enlightenment ideas. A number of Colonial America farmers educated themselves in Latin in order to be able to read the scientific works of Sir Isaac Newton. Newton was very popular in Colonial America and many Americans were very optimistic about the role of science in a free society. These included Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, who, throughout their lives, participated in and encouraged scientific studies.

 

2. From the 1740s on Franklin knew most of the scientists in the American colonies. He was the unofficial leader of the American scientific community. He also corresponded with many Western Europe's leading scientists In this manner, he served as the bridge for scientific information between the Old World and the New World.

3. Franklin was also a man of action, and in the 1740s he conducted a series of experiments to advance the understanding of electricity. Franklin attended two demonstrations on electricity and got very interested in the subject. He read about electricity in various European journals. Then he bought and borrowed some electrical apparatuses

4. On the basis of experiments and observations, Franklin claimed that lightning is a form of electricity. This had been suggested before, but Franklin was the first to prove it.

5. Jefferson also stressed the practical aspects of science. For years he exchanged seeds, plants and botanical information in an effort to improve American farming. On his diplomatic trips, he collected seeds and information about crops in other countries. He introduced various types of rice, olives and grasses.

2. Throughout the 19th century. Britain, France and Germany were the leading sources of new ideas in science and mathematics. These new ideas included: Dalton's atomic theory, Humphrey Davy's electrochemistry discoveries, Darwin's theory of biological evolution, Joule's theory of the conservation of energy, Kelvin's relationships between heat and electricity, Rutherford's theory of the atomic nucleus, Marie and Pierre Curie's studies of radioactivity, Roentgen's discovery of X-rays.

3. The period from 1610 to 1910 was a glorious 100 years for science in Western Europe Great achievements were made in understanding and, in some cases, in controlling events and systems in nature — from the structure of atoms to the movement of the stars.

4. Scientific achievements in the United States during the same period were not so impressive as European developments. However, American scientists were also working hard. Americans developed thousands of products that made life easier, safer and more enjoyable for people during the 19th century.

5. The most outstanding American applied scientist of the 19th century was Thomas Alva Edison (1897-1931), who is the author of more than a thousand original inventions including an electric lamp. Edison investigated numerous scientific discoveries to see if those discoveries could be put to practical use. Edison's primary purpose was the adaptation of science to help people. His designs were very practical.

6. Another important application of scientific ideas to practical uses was provided by the Wright brothers of Dayton, Ohio. In their small bicycle shop, they became interested in descriptions of the glider experiments of a German inventor named Otto Lilienthal. Though a leading American scientist of that time said that it was impossible, the brothers decided to build a powered flying machine. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew a powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flying machine.

CONTROLLING ENERGY

1. Americans have generally been receptive to new technology. Some new technologies and ideas, however, have triggered resentment and resistance from some Americans. The introduction of steam and later the introduction of electric lighting provoked some fear and hostility. But the opposition to these technologies was brief and never widespread.

2. Opposition to nuclear power has been a very different story. The first commercial atomic power plant started operation in Illinois in 1956. At that time it was widely predicted that nuclear power plants would supply nearly all of the nation's electricity by the 1980s. That did not happen. Opposition to the construction of nuclear plants has tended to increase rather than decrease. Safety and environmental considerations have kept construction cost high. As a result, nuclear power has not been able effectively to compete with other power sources in the United States. During the 1970s and 1980s, plans for several power plants were cancelled. Some plants under construction were abandoned and a few existing plants were dosed

3. Though nuclear power was first developed in the United States, several other nations, particularly France, have been more aggressive in their development and use of nuclear power. Much of the American opposition to nuclear power is based on environmental and personal safety concerns. Also Americans have several other more economical sources of energy. On the top of that, Americans emotionally link nuclear power to nuclear weapons and to the great scientific effort that produced them both.

REPUBLIC OF SCIENCE

1. No country has a monopoly on inventive genius Any given scientific discovery is likely to be based on the ideas of people from different nations and different times. However, countries can encourage or discourage scientific inquiry and technological development. From its emergence as an independent nation in the 18 century, the United States had encouraged science and invention. It has done this by promoting a free flow of ideas, by encouraging the growth of useful knowledge and by welcoming creative people from all over the world

2. The United States of America was bom during what is known in Western culture as the Age of Enlightenment. During the period of human history (usually considered to extend from 1680 to 1800), writers, philosophers and statesmen struggled to create 'perfect societies' based on reason and logic

3. Enlightenment thinkers rejected the superstitions, prejudices and restrictions of the past. They argued that by the use of individual reason, unlimited improvements could be made in human capacities and human happiness. In time, they predicted, a free people would, through the use of reason and logic, wipe out crime, ignorance, poverty and war

4. Above all this, Enlightenment philosophers urged the advancement of science - the understanding and use of nature's powers — to improve the human condition. They talked about the ideal 'republic of science.' In such a republic, reason and logic would reign supreme, ideas would be freely examined and exchanged and useful knowledge would be advanced to benefit all people.
