Level 1

Time 5 min.

 

A: Say that you are bored and suggest going out. B: Suggest going to the cinema.
A: Refuse and explain why. Suggest going to the gym to play a game of your choice. B: Refuse and explain why. Suggest going shopping.
A: Say that you love shopping but can't afford it. B: Suggest going out for dinner.
A: Agree and ask where you can go. B: Suggest a restaurant.
A: Ask if it is cheap or expensive. B: Answer the question and suggest going window shopping after dinner.
A: Agree and suggest going immediately. B: Say that you need to dress up.

 

Task 3. In pairs take part in a role-play «Entertainment compromise». Read the task below.

 

You and your friend need to decide what to do tonight. You need to give six suggestions each, and your partner has to reject all but one. Your task is to persuade your partner in at least one activity.

Additional Practice

Task 4. In pairs take part in a role-play. Read the task below.

One of you is a guest, and the other student is the host. The guest asks questions, and the host answers them and provides recommendations.

Level 2

Time 15 min.

 

Card 1 You are the guest and you have a free weekend. You need to decide what to do on Saturday and Sunday (at least three activities for each day). Ask the host about: l places of interest in the city centre. l what places the host recommends visiting; l what you can do outdoors if the weather is good; l what places you can visit out of the city and if you can go there by public transport; l how easy it is to get theatre tickets and what performances to watch; l invite the host to join you in some of the activities you have chosen for the weekend.

 

Card 2 You are the host. Your guest is new to the city and has a free weekend. You need to recommend some activities for two days – Saturday and Sunday (at least three activities for each day). Tell the guest about:   l some historical places of interest in the city centre; l recommend a good place for shopping; l suggest several outdoor activities if the weather is good; name some parks and recreation areas of your city for quiet leisure time; l recommend a nice place out of the city to visit and explain how to get there; l recommend going to the theatre for a performance; l tell you are going to play a game of bowling /darts /… with your friends and invite your guest to join you.

 

 

Self-assessment/Peer-assessment

Task 5. Work in pairs or in small groups to role-play a discussion about how to spend a weekend. Use ROLE-PLAY ASSESSMENT RUBRICS/CRITERIA (Appendix) to assess your/your partner's performance.

Unit 4. Planning a trip

 

 

Objectives: In this unit students will:

- learn common phrases to discuss a trip;

- take part in role-plays to practice talking about trip arrangements and destination options.

 

Task 1. Read the phrases and practice saying them:

 

Possible questions: Possible answers:
How about getting out of the city this weekend? Can we go there by train? Do you have a tent? How about a sleeping bag? What else should we take? Can we leave on Friday after work? Are we going to buy tickets in advance? What shall we do while we are there? Should we invite some friends? I think we can have a weekend getaway /a bus trip to... I shall call to reserve... (a room in the hotel/the tickets). That's a good idea. That sounds terrific. I can borrow … (a tent, a sleeping bag) from my friend. It's going to be fun. I can't wait.

Discussing a destination:

I have always wanted to visit …. It's going to be brilliant!

The highlight of the trip is definitely...

It's a good package deal. It's going to be a trip of a lifetime.

I think the trip to (...) sounds interesting. I'm interested in the trip to (....).

I'd really like to go there, but I'm not sure about …

It's a fascinating place with … (ancient ruins and historical landmarks).

I am not keen on … (sightseeing, etc). What about...

I don't like the activities on that holiday.

Perhaps (...) is the best choice. We can go … (white-water rafting, etc). I really want to do that / to go there.

Okay, so let's go to (....). I really need a holiday like that.
