TEXT 4. “DISCOVERY in the ARCTIC”

In 1819-1826 an English expedition headed by captain E. Perry was exploring the Arctic Seas.

On board the sailors had some quantity of tinned food in metal cans. Several of those cans were left in the Arctic in 1824 by that expedition. They were discovered only in 1911.Two of them, one a tin of pea soup, the other beef were opened immediately and eaten there.

Hereby the travellers pointed out their quite good quality and fitness for human consumption. Some other cans from this finding had been sent to London Museum where they were kept till 1939.That year two more cans from this portion were taken for analysis. One of them contained fried veal, weighing 1,8 kg., the other was a tin of carrot with the weight of 0,9 kg.

As a matter of fact the contents of both cans were found of satisfactory quality. The veal was marked to have an appetizing appearance and a nice taste. Chemical laboratory test confirmed its nutritional value as well as the presence of vitamin D in it.Taking into account the fact that since its canning date more than 115 years had passed this seemed incredible.

Then let's think and draw a conclusion about the necessity of canning nowadays.
