Используют:

· А перед согласными и перед открытым гласным u-

e.g. a factory visit a university

· An перед гласными и перед закрытым h-

e.g. an industry an hour

 

The usage of indefinite articles a\an.

Когда речь идет о неопределенном объекте	a new toy
Перед названиями профессий	She is a technician. He is an engineer.
После восклицаний what, such	What an idea! Such a wonderful book.
Со словами quite, rather	Quite a good example. Rather a bad solution.
Для слов, обозначающих время и единицы измерения	Once a week. 50 miles an hour.

Definite article the. Определенный артикль.

Определенный артикль the ставят перед словами, обозначающими:

Определенный предмет	They have a book. The book is very interesting.
Предмет, существующий в природе в единственном числе	The earth, the moon.
Названия океанов, рек, морей, каналов	The Pacific Ocean, the Suez Canal
Названия сторон света	The north, the west
Обобщения (ИСКЛЮЧЕНИЕ: man- человеческий род)	The Euro is a strong currency.
Существительное с частицей of	The Chamber of Lords
Фамилии мо множественном числе	The Smiths

Артикль не ставится перед:

Сущ-ым, обозначающее названия приемов пищи.	Breakfast is at 8.
Сущ-ым, за которыми следуют числительные	The demonstration is in room 51.
Перед словами: Work, home, bed, space, school, prison, hospital, university, church ИСКЛЮЧЕНИЕ: если имеются ввиду конкретные предметы	She is at work.   The work is complicated.
Названия мест: континентов, стран, городов, парков. ИСКЛЮЧЕНИЕ: федеративные штаты	Asia, France, Paris, Hyde Park. The United States.
Обращениями	Mr\Mrs\Miss\Doctor
Наименованиями различных обществ и религиозных учреждений, названных по имени их основания.	Lloyds bank, St. Pauls Cathedral, Ford, MacDonald
