Укладачі: В. Ю. Єремута, ст. викладач. А.Г. Лобата, викладач. ВСТУП Ці методичні рекомендації мають надати студентам додатковий навчальний матеріал, який сприятиме розвитку усного мовлення. Наведені матеріали призначені для студентів III курсу напряму “Туризм”. Їх тематика повністю збігається з тематикою робочої програми та основним підручником напряму “English for International Tourism” I. Dubicka, M. O’Keeffe. Методичні рекомендації розроблено таким чином, що більша їх частина призначена для самостійного опрацювання з використанням словників загальної лексики та термінологічних словників. Методичні рекомендації побудовані за тематичним принципом і містять десять уроків (Units). Кожний урок структурований так, щоб розвинути навички усного мовлення за певною темою. Кожний розділ містить глосарій до теми. Майже в кожному розділі подається текст для читання та перекладу, пропонується дати відповіді на запитання по тексту, різні лексичні та граматичні вправи. Більшість вправ має комунікативну спрямованість. Вони сприяють автоматизації клішованої лексики професійної спрямованості та допомагають розвивати навички діалогічного та монологічного мовлення студентів. UNIT 1. ALL IN A DAY’S WORK
Reading 1 1. Read about four people who work in the tourist industry. Match each person with one of the jobs: hotel receptionist, restaurant manager, tour leader, tourist information officer Kukrit __ I work in the centre of Bangkok, at Hualamphong railway station. My job is to advise tourists about accommodation, transport, and sightseeing. It takes a lot of energy – you need to be patient and friendly. I really like helping people to have a nice time in my city, but it’s very tiring. Monika __ I work six days a week, including evenings. In this job you need to be well organized and efficient. I plan the menus with the chefs, handle the day-to-day running of the business, do the accounts, and manage a team of ten. The only part of the job I don’t like is dealing with customers’ complaints. Ramon __ What I like about my job is that every day is different. I’m part of a team and we all get on well. I have to check guests in and out of the hotel, take reservations, and sort out problems. I enjoy dealing with people – except the ones who are rude. For a job like this, you need to be a sociable person and to be diplomatic. Alex __ When I’m on a tour, I’m my own boss, and I really enjoy that. You need to be calm and resourceful for this job. Basically, I’m responsible for making sure that the tour goes smoothly and that people enjoy their holiday. I check the transport arrangements, organize the accommodation, tell people what’s happening each day, and deal with any problems. The only negative thing is that it’s a big responsibility.

Present job Runs his own tour company ('Authentic Caribbean Holidays Ltd.'); Promotes Unique Jamaica programme (adventure travel); Attends trade fairs; Runs in-school programmes for Jamaican students to teach tourism development, sustainability, and community tourism; Offers internships and work experience for university students; 'There's so much to do in tourism. There are many aspects: hotels, water sports, tour operation, travel agents.'
What do you need to succeed in tourism? 'Working in tourism is about love-love for the industry. If you don't love it, forget it. It's a people industry. It's providing service. It's people enjoying and experiencing your culture. That's crucial. If you don't have that love, it doesn't make sense. If you work in the industry, you've got to love it.' What do you like about tourism? 'You get to experience different cultures, coming to Europe to see how they operate and live, what they like... In Europe you see something done differently which can help you with the same procedure back home, looking at it from a different angle. Even travelling inter-island, visiting various islands, then you see "OK, this island does it this way, we do it that way", and so forth.' What do you do to relax? As a Caribbean, part of our life is enjoyment – having fun, our music, food, culture – it's natural for us. I play cricket. I love cricket, with friends, on the beach, and football...' What's the future for you? 'My goal is hopefully to become Minister of Tourism, Director of Tourism, that's my main goal. You have to have a rounded knowledge of the industry, from ground level to the top.'

Reading 1 The changing face of the 'attractions industry' As the wishes and tastes of tourists and visitors change, tourist attractions have to change as well. In the last twenty or thirty years, there have been some significant developments. Natural attractions like sandy beaches and mountains cannot change very much, but nevertheless there have been developments, in particular a concern to preserve the environment and to make any buildings fit into the natural context. Perhaps the greatest changes have been in man-made attractions like museums and historic sites, which have become more interesting and entertaining places to visit, while still maintaining their role of teaching visitors about the past. In many of them, the aim is not just to display the past, but to take visitors into the past in an interactive way. Some have been converted into 'living museums' where actors in costumes meet the public and play the roles of characters from the past. In others, history is made vivid and exciting through the use of realistic waxworks, animatronics models, sounds, and even smells, to conjure up a sense of the past. Traditional festivals by definition do not change very much, but there has been a trend to increase the number of special events and festivals as cities realise that holding a music festival or an arts event is a good way of attracting tourists. Entertainment and leisure facilities are always having to change. In the developed world, the simple rectangular swimming pool, for example, is no longer enough – it has to be a water park, with flumes, chutes, splash zones, and wave machines. The tourist is always looking for new attractions, and the 'attractions industry' has to keep on changing.

Reading 2 1. Read these two talks by tour guides: a. 'We are now standing in front of the world's most famous memorial. This magnificent building is a superb example of Indian Mughal architecture. It was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz who died in 1631. It took almost twenty years to build and was completed in 1653. As you can see, it's made of white marble, and it looks especially beautiful early in the morning. Please notice the reflection in the water gardens in front of the main building. Are there any questions? OK, if you are ready, let's go inside.' b. 'This is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. It is a very good example of nineteenth-century engineering. UNIT 7. SERVICE AND SAFETY
Reading 1 1. Read this advice for people travelling to Egypt. Does it come from: a. a holiday brochure? b. an information website for British travellers? c. a postcard? Remember! • Respect local customs. Women should always dress modestly. Remember that you can be arrested for being drunk in public. • Make sure you have a valid visa for a stay of one month. It is impossible to leave Egypt with an out-of-date visa. • Take care if you plan to drive in Egypt. Driving conditions are different from Britain. Make sure you have valid local insurance. Always follow the spend limit. Try not to drive on country roads at night. • Bring enough money. Make that you can get more money if you need it. • Don't carry your passport and valuables with you. Travelling around the world always involves some risk to your health. However, by taking a few simple precautions, and using your common sense, you can minimize the risk of illness, accident, loss, or injury. a. _______________ Always wash your hands before you eat.
