Task 1. Read some notes about the structure of personal and business letters.

Nowadays people are used to write and send their correspondence with the help of computer. The Internet makes it possible for people to communicate by e-mail (i.e. electronic mail). But snail-mail still exists. The main types of business letters are: application, memorandum (used by the stuff of one firm), inquiry letter, letter of offer, letter of order, the letters of congratulations etc.

The general scheme of any letter must have:

1. Heading (includes the sender's address and the date of' the letter. This is the rule both for business and private letters).

2. Inside address (the address of the person or company receiving the letter. it is typical for business letters).

3. Greeting. Most forms of salutation start with:

- Dear Mr./Mrs./Miss Jones - Dear Sally - Dear mother - Му darling, - (in personal letters).

- Dear Sir (s) - Dear Madam - Dear Sir/Madam - Dear Мr. Мrs./Miss Вrown - (in business letters).

4. Body of the letter (reference, purpose, conclusion):

- Write soon. - I will write again soon. - I should be glad to attend an interview. - Please accept our sincere apologies for the trouble. - We apologize sincerely for the trouble caused to you.
       

 

 

5. Complimentary close (saying good-bye)

6. Signature (informal letters are usually signed by your first name).

 

Task 2. Look at the examples in Appendix 4 and answer the questions:

1) What form should a business letter have?

2) What parts are necessary in any business letter?

3) What parts are necessary in any personal letter?

4) What is the difference in the form of a snail-mail letter and e-mail letter?

5) Why is it important to observe the rules in writing business letters'?

 

Task 3. Choose the greetings that can be used in a personal letter and match the greetings with complimentary closes.
