Числівник - частина мови, що виражає кількість або порядок предметів.

Числівники поділяються на кількісні і порядкові. Кількісні числівники означають кількість предметів і відповідають на питання how many? (скільки?)

Порядкові числівники означають порядок при лічбі і відповідають на питання which? (котр

Кількісні числівники від 13 до 19 утворюються за допомогою суфікса - teen Зверніть увагу: three-thirteen, five-fifteen Числівники, що означають десятки, утворюються за допомогою суфікса -ty, який додається до назв одиниць. Зверніть увагу: two - twenty, three - thirty, four - forty, five - fifty Перед числівниками hundred, thousand, million ставиться артикль а або числівник one (один): a (one) hundred a (one) thousand a (one) million	Порядкові числівники, крім first, second, third, утворюються за допомогою суфіксів -th, -eth, які додаються до кількісних числівників: four - fourth, fifteen - fifteenth, twenty - twentieth При утворенні порядкових числівників fifth, twelfth буква v у кількісних числівників five, twelve змінюється на f, а буква е випускається У числівнику eighth випускається буква t: eight - eighth.
4. Числівники hundred, thousand, million не приймають закінчення -s, коли перед ними стоять числівники two, three, four та ін.: three hundred four thousand five million 5. Числівники hundred, thousand, million можуть вживатися із закінченням -s у множині, коли вони виражають невизначену кількість сотень тисяч, мільйонів. У цьому випадку вони перетворюються в іменник з прийменником of: hundreds of letters, thousands of kilometers, millions of roses. Між сотнями (або тисячами і мільйонами) та десятками й одиницями завжди ставиться сполучник and: 101 - one hundred and one, 433 - four hundred and thirty three, 5,250 - five thousand two hundred and fifty, 10,002 - ten thousand and two Зверніть увагу: розгляди багатозначних чисел відокремлюються один від іншого комами - 2,354, відповідно в українській мові 2354 або 2.354	1. У числівнику nine опускається буква е: nine - ninth. 2. До числівників, які закінчуються на -ty додається суфікс -eth, а буква у змінюється на і: thirty - thirtieth, fifty - fiftieth та ін. 3. У складених порядкових числівниках лише останній набуває форми порядкового: the two hundred and thirty fifth. 4. Перед порядковим числівником ставиться означений артикль: the first, the tenth. 5. Позначення номерів може здійснюватися двома шляхами - за допомогою порядкових або кількісних числівників: the first lesson або lesson one, the third paragraph або paragraph three. Зверніть увагу: page 20 - page twenty, room 5 - room five. Якщо перед порядковим числівником стоїть неозначений артикль, цей числівник набуває додаткового значення - ще один: We bought a second chair.

Дроби.

У звичайних дробах числівник позначається кількісним числівником, а знаменник - порядковим:

1/2 - one second або half

1/3 - one third

2/3 - two thirds (зверніть увагу: якщо в числівнику множина, тобто два і більше, то числівник у знаменнику стоїть у множині, тобто додається закінчення -s).

У десяткових дробах цілі числа відокремлюються від десятих крапкою (в українській мові - комою):

Словотвір - суфікси та префікси.

 

У англійській мові є певні способи утворення нових слів. Головними з них є:

1. Афіксація -	утворення нового слова (основи) шляхом додавання суфікса або префікса до вже існуючого слова: teach + er = teacher, un + luckly = unluckly
2. Конверсія-	утворення нового слова із вже існуючого шляхом простого переосмислення, без будь-якої зміни його форми: to burn (палити) - a burn ( опік), to round (огинати) - round (круглий)
3. Словоскладання-	утворення нового слова шляхом поєднання двох вже існуючих слів, зазвичай без зміни їх форми: steamship - пароплав - від steam- пар, ship - корабель.
