Lesson 21. Data center. Cloud computing.

Exercise 1. Read the texts and translate them into Russian.

Data center.

As organizations evolve, they require increasing amounts of computing power and hard drive storage space. If left unaddressed, this will impact an organization’s ability to provide vital services. The loss of vital services means lower customer satisfaction, lower revenue, and, in some situations, loss of property or life.

Large enterprises typically own a data center to manage the storage and data access needs of the organization. In these single tenant data centers, the enterprise is the only customer or tenant using the data center services. However, as the amount of data continues to expand, even large enterprises are expanding their data storage capacity by utilizing the services of third-party data centers.

Cloud computing versus Data center.

The terms data center and Cloud computing are often incorrectly used. These are the correct definitions of data center and Cloud computing:

· Data center - Typically a data storage and processing facility run by an in-house IT department or leased offsite.

· Cloud computing - Typically an off-premise service that offers on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. These resources can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort.

Cloud service providers use data centers for their Cloud services and Cloud-based resources. To ensure availability of data services and resources, providers often maintain space in several remote data centers. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in their Special Publication 800-145, define a Cloud model that consists of five characteristics, three service models, and four deployment models.

Characteristics of cloud computing.

As shown in the figure, the Cloud model includes five characteristics:

· On-demand self-service - the network administrator can buy additional computing space in the Cloud without requiring the interaction with another human.

· Broad network access - access to the Cloud is available using a wide variety of client devices, such as PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

· Resource pooling - the computing capacity of the Cloud provider is shared among all its customers and can be assigned and reassigned based on customer demand.

· Rapid elasticity - resource allocation to customers can quickly expand or contract with demand. To the customer, the resources and capabilities of the Cloud service provider appear to be unlimited.

· Measured service - resource usage can be easily monitored, controlled, reported, and billed to provide full visibility to both the Cloud service provide and customer.

Exercise 2. Give the definitions to the next terms:

SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, Private cloud, Public cloud, Community cloud, Hybrid cloud.

Exercise 3. Match the terms given in the ex. 2 with their descriptions.

1) This cloud type is made available to the public by a service provider who hosts the cloud infrastructure.

2) The cloud provider supplies the network equipment, virtualized network services, and the supporting network infrastructure.

3) The cloud type is shared among several organizations.

4) This cloud infrastructure is managed and used by a particular organization.

5) The cloud provider manages and delivers the end-user applications over the Internet.

6) This cloud infrastructure is a combination of two or more cloud types: public, private or community.

7) The cloud provider manages the infrastructure, such as the hardware and operating system.

8) An operating model for delivering IT support for SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS.

Unit 7. Mobile and peripheral devices.

Lesson 22. Mobile devices.

Exercise 1. Work in small groups. Remember what mobile devices do you know? Which mobile devices do you use? Tell the group about its functions.
