The usage of articles with geographical names

1) The definite article the is used with the geographical names of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers,

mountains etc.

the Urals, the Volga, the Black Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Alps.

2)names of newspapers, magazines, hotels, shops

The Times, the Meridian, the Kaspi bank, the Kazakhstan hotel

But: mount Alatau, lake Balkhash, river Volga

Directions of the Earth: the North, the East, the West, the South, the Far East

Names of the states which have administrative terms

The USA, the United Kingdom, the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea

It isn’t used with the names of world parts, states, towns

Europe, Asia, Australia, American continent

Russia, Germany, France, Kazakhstan, Poland, Finland

Almaty, Moscow, Astana, Washington, London, Paris
