Памятка о терминах английского языка.

Общаясь, люди выражают свои мысли при помощи слов, которые помогают не только передать информацию, но и выразить отношение к обсуждаемому. Эти слова могут быть книжно-литературными, нейтральными и разговорными. Если вы разговариваете с другом, то, вероятнее всего, использовать будете слова нейтральные и разговорные, а в беседе с учителем, отвечая на вопрос экзаменационного билета, будете стараться употреблять слова книжно-литературные и нейтральные. Эти правила касаются общения как на родном, так и иностранном языке.

Слова английского языка также делятся на три слоя, и важно понимать, что цели общения, статус собеседников влияют на выбор синонима.В газетно-журнальных текстах, например, присутствует большое количество терминов - книжно-литературных слов, которые обозначают определенные понятия из области науки, техники. В тексте данной статьи используется немало терминов из области компьютерных технологий такие, как nongamer, Windows, interface, server, database, и др.

При обсуждении различных вопросов, в частности технических, термины играют важную роль, так как они помогают собеседникам поделиться друг с другом точной информацией из какой-либо области. Кроме того, знание терминов помогает при чтении и понимании статей, в беседах на какие-либо технические темы с профессионалами, а также при прочтении художественных произведений. Термины не следует путать с так называемым жаргоном или профессионализмами (например, “worm”, “netter”, “comp”, «мыло», «аська», «софтина» и т.д.).

Термины – непростая группа слов. В частности, прежде всего необходимо суметь распознать термин в тексте, предложении. Например, в предложении Demography is the statistical study of human population, где demography является научным термином, который в указанном предложении обозначает «изучение народонаселения с использованием статистики». При переводе терминов можно пользоваться специальными словарями, либо зайти на сайт www.multitran.ru.

4. Work in pairs. Listen to your partner’s report and write down the terms you will hear.

5. Prepare a dialogue between two Russian pupils who discuss a social-networking site ‘vkontakte’ following the instructions in the table. Make sure you use terms.

A: Greet your interlocutor. Ask how he’s doing.	B: Greet your partner. Answer the question and give thanks to him.
A: Say that you’d like to join the site ‘vkontakte’. Ask whether he knows about it and what he thinks about the site.	B: Say that you are registered there and think that the site has a charmingvisual style where one gets access to all types of entertainment.
A: Ask if it’s difficult to deal with the site, whether one needs some special software.	B: Deny it in a polite manner. Say that it’s a mouse clickaway. Add that one can ask the system to remember one’s password so that one won't have to enter it everytime one wants to log on.
A: Ask about types of entertainment.	B: Say that it allows users to be in constant contact with each other, to friend people, add comments, play different videogames, etc.
A: Ask about security risks and any changes that take place in the site ‘vkontakte’,	B: Say that the developers of the website do their best to maintain a low security risk. Besides, there’s special programmes against spam. Mention that the creator constantly adds new interesting changes to make the site more appealing to users.
A: Thank your partner for the information. Say goodbye.	B: Say goodbye.

6. Role-play. Choose a part and prepare for the interview.

A: Imagine that one of you is a Russian journalist who interviews a famous creator of social-networking site Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Prepare 8 questions to ask the inventor. Do not forget to use terms (the ones you have learnt from the text and some new ones). You can ask about the following: how to join Facebook, what steps to take, what opportunities it offers for users, what main advantages it has, whether it’s easy in dealing with it, how it changes people’s pastime, etc.). While asking and answering you can use such words as to log on, blogging, spam, software, hardware, security risks, interface,etc. You might want to give your interlocutor a present (a pin with Russian symbols or a printed card about Russian social networks).

B: You are Mark Zuckerberg. You are going to meet a group of Russian pupils who are going to ask you questions about your invention, your site Facebook. They may ask you about how the idea of creating this website came about, what the target audience was initially, how many users you planned to reach out to, what makes this website different from all the rest, how you like the fact that these days in lots of countries there are social network sites similar to the one you created. Think of some useful information you might share with the Russian teenagers.

1. Read the excerpt from a “Final Fantasy Fans” forum and say what the main subject of the discussion is.

2. Read the Colloquial Vocabulary Guidelines ( Памятка о разговорной лексике английского языка) and find all the colloquial words in the article. Translate them into Russian. How do they affect the dialogue?
