Yesterday was Sherman and Dorothy Johnson's twenty-third anniversary. They went to the Continental Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is a very special place for Sherman and Dorothy because they went there on their first date twenty-four years ago. Sherman and Dorothy sat at a quiet, romantic table in the corner. They had two glasses of wine and then they ordered dinner. First Dorothy ordered a bowl of vegetable soup, and Sherman ordered a glass of tomato juice. For the main course Dorothy ordered baked chicken with rice and Sherman ordered fish with potatoes. For dessert Dorothy ordered a piece of apple pie and Sherman ordered a bowl of strawberries. Sherman and Dorothy enjoyed their dinner very much. The soup was delicious and the tomato juice was fresh. The chicken was wonderful and the rice was tasty. The fish was fantastic and the potatoes were excellent. The apple pie was magnificent and the strawberries were out of this world! Sherman and Dorothy had a wonderful evening at the Continental Restaurant. It was a very special anniversary. Questions: Where did Sherman and Dorothy celebrate their wedding anniversary? What dishes did they order at the restaurant? How did they find the cooking? Dinner for Two Max Roberts is a bachelor. He lives in a small flat in London. Max not only enjoys eating food, he enjoys preparing it as well. His favourite hobby is cooking. He has had so much practice that he has become an expert cook. His sister, Anne, called on him last Sunday evening. It was nearly dinner time and Max was in the kitchen. He was wearing an apron and preparing a meal. "You will stay to dinner, of course", Max said. "I'm starving!" Ann said. "Is there enough food for both of us?" "I hope so," Max answered. Anne lifted the lid of the saucepan. "Mm", she said. "It smells delicious. What is it?" "It's a Mexican dish", Max answered. "But this dish ought to be good. I've been preparing it for 5 hours". "There's enough food here for ten people!"Anne said as she looked into the saucepan. "Are you expecting company?" "No", Max replied. "I was going to eat it all myself". Questions: Where does Max live? What is Max's favourite hobby? When did his sister call on him? Where was Max at the time? What was Max doing when his sister called? What sort of dish was Max preparing? Why did his sister ask him if he was expecting company? An Unwelcome Visitor The door bell rang. Mrs Carson opened the front door. Her heart sank when she saw Mrs Barbidge. Whenever Mrs Barbidge called she stayed for hours and hours. "Good afternoon, Mrs Carson", Mrs Barbidge said. "I was just passing and thought I'd drop in to say hullo". "How very thoughtful of you", Mrs Carson replied. "Do come in." Just as Mrs Carson had feared Mrs Barbidge stayed for several hours. It was nearly six o'clock and Mr Carson would be home from work soon. He couldn't stand Mrs Barbidge. Mrs Carson kept wondering how she could persuade Mrs Barbidge to leave without offending her. "Has your husband got home from work yet?" Mrs Carson asked. "Oh, yes," Mrs Barbidge answered. "He always gets home about 5 o'clock". "It's nearly 6 o'clock. Won't he be getting worried about you?" Mrs Carson said. "I thought of that," Mrs Barbidge said. "But it's so pleasant here. We've had such a lovely afternoon. You know what I'll do? I'll ring up my husband and tell him to come round too. May I use your phone, please?" Questions: Why was Mrs Carson disappointed when Mrs Barbidge called? When does Mr Carson come from work? How does Mr Carson feel about Mrs Barbidge? How did Mrs Carson try to get Mrs Barbidge to leave? Why did Mrs Barbidge decide to telephone her husband? It’s interesting to know 1. You'll find restaurants for every situation in the US. If you are in a hurry, you may just want to grab some "junk food" at a grocery store or a candy counter, or you can get a bite to eat at one of the many fast food chains, like McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Taco Time. Or you can get a hero or submarine sandwich "to stay" or "to go" from a sandwich shop or deli. Some of these places have tables, but many don't. People eat in their cars or take their food home, to their offices or to parks. If you prefer sitting down but still don't want to spend much, you can try a cafeteria. At all of these places, you pay at a cash register before you sit down, and you don't have to tip anybody — but you usually have to clear the table when you finish! Glossary candy п.: very sweet sugary food deli п.: short for delicatessen, a shop where you can buy salads and cooked meats and have sandwiches made junk food п.: snack foods that are not good for you 2. I'm a terrible cook. I've tried hard but it's no use. I've got lots of cookery books, I choose a dish I want to cook, I read the recipe, I prepare all the necessary ingredients and follow the instructions. But the result is terrible, and I just have a sandwich or some other quick snack. So I often eat out. I don't like grand restaurants. It's not the expense, it's just that I don't feel at ease in them. First the waiter gives me a menu which I can't understand because it's complicated and has lots of foreign words. At the end of the meal when I pay the bill I never know how much to leave as a tip. I prefer fast food places, like hamburger shops where you pay at once and sit down and eat straight away. And I like take-away places, where you buy a meal in a special container and take it home. 3. Maureen often gives dinner parties at home. She loves entertaining. She lays the table: puts the cutlery in the right places, sets out the plates and puts a clean white napkin at each place. For the meal itself, she usually gives her guests some kind of starter first, for example soup or melon. Next comes the main course which is usually meat (unless some of her guests are vegetarians or they're on a special diet) with a side-dish of salad. For dessert it's usually fruit or ice-cream and then coffee. When everyone has gone home, she must think about doing the washing up, as in the kitchen the sink is full of dirty cutlery. Unit 9 Dietology. Popular diets Most people say if you are healthy you are happy. It is impossible to be healthy without paying attention to the food we consume. Many people try to keep to diets in order to feel better, younger and more beautiful. Dietary is a system of dieting. There are many diets in different dietary books. But what diet is the best for you? Only your doctor and your organism can prompt you what to eat. There are many types of diets for different classes of people. Certain groups of people, such as young children or older people, have special dietary needs. Because children grow rapidly, they need food not only to replace worn-out tissues and provide energy, but also to build new tissue. A child's diet should include milk products, eggs, lean meat, poultry, fish, fruits, vegetables, and cereals. A well-balanced diet is important to the older person as it is to the child. Older people need as many nutrients as young adults. But if their activity is reduced, they will need fewer calories. Expectant or nursing mothers and babies also need special diets.
Some popular diets are given below: Diet of models In the morning: 1 soft-boiled egg. 3 hours later: 100g curd, 1 glass of milk without sugar. 3 hours later: the same. Keeping to this diet once in 3 days during a month (no sugar and salt) it is possible to waste from 3 to 5 kilos.
Milk diet (one of the diets by the English scientist Harry Benjamin)
Day 1: drink 1 glass of milk every 2 hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Day 2: drink 1 glass of milk every hour and a half from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Day 3: drink 1 glass of milk every hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Then gradually increase consumption of it up to 1 glass every half an hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (if your organism can take it). Note: Milk must be fresh and unboiled. It can be slightly warmed up. Being on this diet you can sometimes eat 10-12 dates or prunes in case of stomach disorders. Besides milk you can drink fruit juices. Transition from a milk diet to a usual one is effected in the following way. On the first day drink milk till 3 p.m., eat nothing, then eat some salad. The next day do the same. On the third day you can eat your usual food.
Michelle Montinyak’s diet His method of losing weight consists of two stages: Stage 1 – losing weight Stage 2 – weight stabilization At the first stage it is compulsory to keep to multiple nutrition with a certain set of products for each meal. The first stage lasts as long as a person attains an ideal weight. Then the second stage begins and it lasts for the rest of life. There are main principles of stage 2: - eat salads if you combine carbohydrates and fats; - don’t eat sugar, honey, jam and sweets (eat sugar substitutes); - eat bread of coarse grinding; - avoid eating sauces or check them in flour content; - change butter for vegetable margarine, especially at breakfast; - eat fish; - drink skimmed milk; - eat strawberries, raspberries and bilberries, - consume chocolate and ice-cream in a moderate dose; - don’t drink much alcohol, prefer dry wine eating a salad from fresh vegetables, cheese, sausage or a crabmeat stick beforehand; - drink water in meals period (about1,5 litre a day); - don’t drink cola, lemonade, any fizzy drink; - drink weak coffee or tea. Are You Hooked? No one likes to admit they're an addict. They are sad creatures ruled by deadly substances such as tobacco or alcohol. But there are others less damaging to the health. Like it or not, large numbers of us are addicts. Addictions can be chemical (caffeine), emotional (shopping), physical (exercise) or downright strange. You're the odd one out if you don't have at least one everyday addiction. What do you do when you feel under pressure, bored or depressed? Get lost in the world of TV? Go shopping? Eat one bar of chocolate after another? Becci has been a chocaholic for tenyears. 'I just get an urge for it— a need,' says Becci. 'I really don't know why, it's just so delicious. People say that chocolate can make up for lost passion—I don't know about that, but I love the way it melts in my mouth.' Every day, Becci gets through several bars of her favourite Cadbury's chocolate (the one with the soft caramel centre is the best). But it's not only the bars she goes for— hot chocolate drinks and chocolate cakes are also essentials. Towards exam time, Becci feels she has to increase her intake to cope with all the work. 'If I get up late, I'll have chocolate for breakfast, then more and more during the day. I am addicted. It's like smoking, I suppose, but I have no plans to give it up. If I like it so much, why should I?' Addiction to exercise can ruin your life, Janine learnt to her cost. 'I was swimming at least fifty lengths a day, jogging to the gym and doing three aerobic classes a week. At home, I used an exercise bike and keep-fit videos. My husband said that I didn't have time for him, and he was right. But I couldn't believe it when he left me. Finally, I came to my senses, I wanted to get fit but it all got out of hand and my addiction ruined my marriage. Now, I'm seeing a counsellor and gradually reducing the amount of exercise I do.' One Member of Parliament just couldn't live without his favourite drink. He had on average eighteen pints of tea a day and his addiction raised concern about his health. When he collapsed, some people blamed his excessive tea drinking. This man has calculated that, over the years, he had drunk enough tea (around 300,000 gallons) to displace an ocean-going liner. If he ever tied to stop, he would find it agonising. Anne shopped for thirteen hours a day without leaving her living room— she was addicted to TV shopping. When she got home from her job as a nightcare worker at 8.30 a.m., Anne would immediately tune into a satelliteTV shopping channel and buy everything in sight. Her home was soon an Aladdin's cave of household goods and trendy clothes she didn't need. When her cash ran out, she stole money from the elderly patients in her care and was charged with theft. 'It seemed so easy,' she says. I didn't realize I'd become so addicted.' Anne's family have now removed her satellite receiver.
Task 4. Read the following dialogue.
