For example, our last teacher got us to write down the history of the village which our grandparents knew — we didn't realise how much the village had changed; make a nature calendar so we learned more about farming and about the animals and plants in our valley; read all sorts of books and write a newspaper about our village.

Modern means of communication

People use various means of communication to get from one place to another.

In the old days people had to travel several days, weeks and months to get to the place they needed. They either went on foot, by coaches driven by horses or by boats and ships.

Nowadays people like to travel by air as it is the fastest way of traveling. A lot of people prefer to travel by train because they can look at the passing villages, forests and fields. Some of us like going by car. You can go as slowly or fast as you like. You can stop when and where you want.

Londoners use the underground railway best of all. Their metro is the oldest in the world. It was opened in 1863. And in 1904 the first bus route was opened in London. Londoners don’t use trams, though London was the first city where trams appeared. When Londoners leave the town, they use trains, ships or airplanes.

One of the first duties we owe to ourselves is to keep our bodies in perfect health. If our body suffers from any disorder, our mind suffers with it, and we are unable to make much progress in knowledge, and we are unfit to perform those duties which are required of us in social life.

There are certain laws of health which deserve particular attention and they are so simple that even a child can learn them. A constant supply of pure fresh air is indispensable to good health. To secure this, nothing impure should remain either within or near our homes, and every room in the house especially the bedrooms, should be properly ventilated every day.

Perfect cleanliness is also essential. The whole body should be washed as often as possible. The skin is full of minute pores, cells, blood vessels and nerves. It breathes the way the lungs do. Therefore it should always be clean.

A certain amount of exercises is necessary to keep the body in perfect condition. Late hours are very harmful to the health as they exhaust the nervous system. Most essential to our body is food. You should be moderate in eating and drinking.

Professional sport is also paid much attention to in our republic. There are different sporting societies, clubs and complexes. The most famous of them are the Olympic complex “ Raubichi”, Minsk Arena and “ Dinamo” stadium.

In the last years Belarusian sportsmen take an active part in the world sports movement. O.Korbut, V. Shcherba and A. Medved are prominent names in our sports.

As for me, I like sports. In winter I skate and ski. In summer I prefer cycling and playing football and volleyball. But sport is not just for participants.
