PEOPLE AND RELATIONS MEETING. INTRODUCTION I. PRACTISE READING SOME USEFUL EXPRESSIONS:

1) Let me introduce you (myself, my friend, wife, etc.) to you (my friend, etc.) - Разрешите представиться (представить Вам моего друга, жену, т.д.).

2) Have you met each other before? - Вы встречались ранее?

NOTES:

How do you do? - this is not really a question, but a formula used when people meet for the first time or have not seen each other for a long time. The usual answer to it is: "How do you do?".

dentist.

Mr Bowen: So I did, thank you, Tess, though I don't think I'll be able to keep it. I know it's short

notice, but would you try to cancel it for me?

Secretary: Shall I make another appointment for you then?

Mr Bowen: Yes, will you, please?

IV.

Nurse: Doctor Croft's surgery. Good morning.

Patient: Good morning. My name is Jackson. I was wondering if Doctor Croft could see me today?

Nurse: Sorry, Mr Jackson, but we are very busy today. I can make an appointment for you for

Wednesday morning.

Patient: Oh, but couldn't the doctor see me now? I'm in great pain.

Nurse: Could you hold on a moment, please. I'll ask the doctor.

Patient: Thank you.

Husband: Feel like a trip to town this morning?

Wife: Town? This morning? But how can we? You have an appointment with Johnson at his office at

eleven thirty, haven't you?

Husband: No, not now. I did have, but his secretary rang up a few minutes ago to cancel it. Johnson's

down with flu or something, apparently. She said she'd been trying to reach me yesterday but no one

answered the phone.

Miss Martell: Good morning. Is this Mr Howard's office?

Assistant: Mr John Howard?

Miss Martell: Yes. I was wondering whether Mr Howard could see me. My name is Martell.

Assistant: Oh, I'm very sorry, but I'm afraid Mr Howard has several engagements today. He's at a

meeting this morning and he has several other appointments this afternoon.

Miss Martell: Then would you kindly make an appointment for me?

Assistant: Yes, certainly. I'll just look in his diary (дневник). Now, would Friday, three- fifteen, suit

you?

Miss Martell: No, I'm afraid I shan't be in town on Friday.

Assistant: Oh. Then would you be able to come on Monday at eleven o'clock?

Next to the booking-office there is a waiting-room where people are waiting for the train's arrival. On the platform the porters are very busy carrying luggage to the train or pushing it on their trucks. They are taking their trunks and suitcases to the luggage-van. Look at the labels on them - Paris, Berne, Brussels. Quite a lot of people are going abroad. There is a through train to Paris; it's due out at 8.50. At the railway station we can see a restaurant which is open. There aren't many people in it, just a few having breakfast, but there are rather more people having a snack.

Here is a bookstall where you can buy newspapers and magazines.Then follows a left-luggage office. What is that woman saying to the man at the left-luggage office?

Man: Yes, madam?

Woman: I want to leave some luggage here until this afternoon; is that all right?

Man: Oh, yes,madam, that'll be quite all right. Is this just one bag?

Woman: No, there are those two suitcases and this trunk. My husband will call for them with his car

this afternoon.

Man: Very well, madam. What name, please?

Woman: Mrs Macpherson.

Man: Right. Here's the ticket. That'll be twenty pence, please. Thank you.

Here is our train coming slowly into the platform. Let us hurry to our carriage.
