Practical ways to build ethics into PR programs
Define in writing the specific issue or conflict. (The act of writing or typing helps to clarify it in your mind.) Identify the relevant internal or external factors, e.g. political, social, financial, that may influence the decision. Identify and rank the key values and principles involved. What reasons can you provide for prioritizing one competing value or principle over another? Identify the parties who will be affected by the decision and define your obligation to each. Do you need to confer with those parties about the potential risks and consequences of alternative courses of action? Develop and implement an action plan that is consistent with the ethical priorities you have determined as central to the dilemma. Reflect on the outcome of this ethical decision-making process. How would you evaluate the consequences of this process for those involved? 1. Why is PR considered to be one of the most maligned professions? Can you agree? Give your grounds. 2. How can you comment on some ways PR is generally referred to? 3. Why is the PR profession regarded vulnerable and how are most PR-practitioners perceived in terms of this concept? 4. Do you share the author’s opinion that PR people have no authority and merely act as intermediaries between the company’s management and the client? Why? 5. Do you believe PR-specialists need to be responsible for the messages they actually disseminate? 6. What do some journalists complain about when dealing with PR people? 7. Say a few words about how you would handle each of the situations connected with the ethical decision-making described in the text? 8. What is the core principle of the utilitarian approach to ethical dilemmas? 9. Do you agree that “The ends justify the means”? Give your reasons. 10. What is your attitude to advocacy ethics? Can you justify the “Do what is right, regardless of the consequences” principle? 11. In which cases is situational ethics applicable? 12. Go over the practical ways of building ethics into Pr programs enumerated in the text and say which of them you find the most/least relevant and for what reason.
