A) We live in an age of international communication. International contacts are on the increase, and as a result more people than ever, from different backgrounds and cultures and who speak different languages, find themselves coming together to discuss issues of all kinds - economic, political, legal, cultural, technical. If they are to communicate effectively these people must feel able to express themselves in complete confidence that they will be understood by others.

This is where conference interpreters have an invaluable role to play, facilitating communication between people who speak a different language and serving as a bridge between different cultures.

A conference interpreter can be self-employed (free lance) or employed as a permanent or staff interpreter by a national or international organization in the public or the private sector.

The great majority of conference interpreters work free lance; becoming a staff or permanent interpreter depends on a variety of factors, language combination being one. Even so, it is a fact that interpreters may and do change status.

B) In order to work as an interpreter for the European Parliament, the following are necessary:

− a university degree (in any field) or equivalent qualification,

− training or experience as a conference interpreter;

− at least three working languages from among the official languages of the European Union.

To cover its needs while maintaining the requisite flexibility, the European Parliament employs both staff interpreters (officials), on a permanent basis, and freelance interpreters on a day-to-day basis as auxiliary conference interpreters. While all official EU languages are treated on an equal footing, working from a less widely known language is a considerable advantage. Language combinations should also include the more widely spoken languages, such as English, French, German, Italian and Spanish

A) Notre époque est placée sous le signe de la communication internationale. Les contacts entre pays s'intensifient et, de ce fait, un nombre croissant de personnes, de langue et de culture différentes, est amené à s'entretenir de questions économiques, politiques, juridiques, techniques, culturelles et autres. Pour que ces personnes puissent communiquer avec efficacité, il faut qu'elles puissent s'exprimer avec la certitude d'être comprises par les autres participants.

C'est pour cela que l'on a recours aux services d'interprètes de conférence qui servent de trait d'union entre les cultures et facilitent, ce faisant, la communication entre personnes parlant des langues différentes.

L'interprète de conférence peut être soit indépendant (freelance), soit attaché à un organisme public ou privé, national ou international (interprète permanent ou fonctionnaire).

La grande majorité des interprètes de conférence travaillent en freelance, et la possibilité d'obtenir un emploi "permanent" dépend de quantités de facteurs, dont la combinaison linguistique. Quoi qu'il en soit, il arrive que les interprètes changent de statut, passant de permanent à freelance et vice-versa.

B) Pour travailler en tant qu'interprète au Parlement européen il faut:

- être titulaire d'un diplôme universitaire (dans n'importe quelle discipline) ou posséder une qualification équivalente;

- avoir une formation d'interprète de conférence ou une expérience équivalente;

- avoir une connaissance approfondie d'au moins trois langues officielles de l'Union européenne.

Afin de couvrir ses besoins, le Parlement européen utilise à la fois des interprètes permanents (fonctionnaires) et des interprètes indépendants (free-lance) engagés sur la base de contrats de durée déterminée en tant qu'auxiliaire interprète de conférence. Bien que toutes les langues officielles de l'UE soient traitées sur un pied d'égalité, la connaissance d'une langue "rare" constitue un atout indéniable. Les combinaisons linguistiques devraient aussi inclure les langues de grande diffusion (anglais, français, allemand, italien, espagnol).
