In the foodservice business, beverage service is extremely profitable. In many establishments drinks are part of the complete meal service. Some drinks may be the principle part of the business.

There are many places that offer different kinds of beverages.

The most common drinking enterprise is a bar. It is an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks as its principal business. Bar is a counter service restaurant, where customers sit at a counter and are served by the person who prepares beverages.

Pub (short for public house) is a bar that serves various beverages, with a long counter from which drinks are dispensed. Traditionally, pubs were primarily drinking establishments with food in a decidedly secondary position. A typical pub has a large selection of beers and ales on tap.

Cocktail lounge usually has a bar, small tables, a relaxed atmosphere, and minimal entertainment. Itis a place that serves alcoholic drinks, usually in more comfortable surroundings than a bar. Cocktail loungeusually serves a variety of cocktails. A cocktail is a mixed drink that contains at least one alcoholic beverage and other ingredients.

Tavern is an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks, usually in a residential or industrial area.

Night club is an establishment that offers drinks and food as well as the additional attractions of dance music and entertainment.

Almost every government jurisdiction throughout the world requires a license to sell alcoholic beverages. In some places the fee for such a license is small but in others, this fee can be a major expense for the restaurant owner or operator. The profit margin is usually much higher for alcoholic beverages than for food. The mark-up for wines and liquors can be increased with less customer resistance than for food. Restaurants that do a large drink business often employ a special purchasing agent for alcoholic beverages and also have special storage facilities.
