The following signals, used or exhibited either together or separately, indicate distress and need of assistance: (a) a gun or other explosive signal fired at intervals of about a minute; (b) a continuous sounding with any fog-signalling apparatus; (c) rockets or shells, throwing red stars fired one at a time at short intervals; (d) a signal made by radiotelegraphy or by any other signaling method consisting of the group... - - -... (SOS) in the Morse Code; (e) a signal sent by radiotelephony consisting of the spoken word «Mayday»; (f) the International Code Signal of distress indicated by N.C.; (g) a signal consisting of a square flag having above or below it a ball or anything resembling a ball; (h) flames on the vessel (as from a burning tar barrel, oil barrel, etc.); (i) a rocket parachute flare or a hand flare showing a red light; (j) a smoke signal giving off orange-coloured smoke; (k) slowly and repeatedly raising and lowering arms outstretching to each side; (l) the radiotelegraph alarm signal; (m) the radiotelephony alarm signal; (n) signals transmitted by emergency position-indicating radio beacons; (o) approved signals transmitted by radiocommunication systems, including survival craft radar transponders. What is MAYDAY? PAN-PAN? MAYDAY is to be used to announce a distress message. PANPAN is to be used to announce an urgency message.
What type of message must Captain send in case of distress? In case of distress Captain must send MAYDAY message.
Security levels How many ISPS security levels do you know? I know that the ISPS Code acknowledges 3 threat-levels: At security level 1, the following activities shall be carried out in order to take preventive measures against security incidents: .1 ensuring the performance of all ship security duties; .2 controlling access to the ship; .3 controlling the embarkation of persons and their effects; .4 monitoring restricted areas to ensure that only authorized persons have access; .5 monitoring of deck areas and areas surrounding the ship; .6 supervising the handling of cargo and ship’s stores; and .7 ensuring that security communication is readily available. At security level 2, the additional protective measures, specified in the ship security plan, shall be implemented for each activity detailed in section. At security level 3, further specific protective measures, specified in the ship security plan, shall be implemented for each activity detailed in section.

This Code applies to: the following types of ships engaged on international voyages: .1 passenger ships, including high-speed passenger craft; .2 cargo ships, including high-speed craft, of 500 gross tonnage and upwards; and .3 mobile offshore drilling units; and .4 port facilities serving such ships engaged on international voyages. All ships which are obliged to carry an ISPS certificate, and the relevant harbor facilities have to compile a security scheme: - to know who is on board or in the facility; - to control entrances and perform visitor identity checks; - to control loading and discharging cargo and stores. Security level 2 means the level for which appropriate additional protective security measures shall be maintained for a period of time as a result of heightened risk of a security incident. I must report transportation security incidents or suspicious people, objects or activities to Company Security Officer (CSO) or the Ship Security Officer (SSO).
