How many types f ships do you know? / What is a dredger?

There are a lot of ship types that can be classified by their purpose of use into cargo, passenger ships and special purpose ships. However, some ships can combine functions due to their hull and deck arrangement, and therefore can be placed in more than one category.

Dry Cargo ships Liquid Cargo ships Passenger ships
Unit cargo - Container vessel - Roll-on/ Roll-off - Heavy-cargo vessel - Refrigerated ships - Cattle ship Bulk cargo - Bulk carrier - Ore carrier - Crude carrier - Product tanker - Chemical tanker – LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)/LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers - Passenger ship (liner) - Car and passenger ferries - Cruise ship
Multi-purpose ship (carry more than 1 type of cargo)
Navy vessels - Aircraft carriers - Cruisers - Destroyers - Frigates - Submarines - Mine sweepers Fishing - Trawlers - Other types of fishing vessels Dredgers - Trailing hopper suction dredger - Cutter suction dredger - Rock-dumper Work ships - Crane vessels - Cable-layers - Buoy-layers - Oil-recovery vessels - Shear leg cranes
Auxiliary vessels - Seagoing tugs - Harbour tugs - Icebreakers - Pilot vessels - Coast guard vessels - Research vessels Yachts - Motor yachts - Sailing yachts Various - Hydrofoils - Floating dock - Submersible platform - Pontoons, barges Offshore material - Drilling rigs/ Jack-up - Drill-ships - Pipe layers - Floating (Production) Storage and Offloading vessel F(P)SO

A dredger belongs to special purpose ships. It is used to excavate and remove material from the bottom of a body of water. For example, a scoop attached to the end of a rope or pole by which a man can draw sediments up from the bottom of a pond is a dredger. So, a motorized crane equipped with a drag bucket or clamshell (grabber) that is used to scoop material from the bottom of a body of water is also a dredger. The crane could be located on the bank, or perhaps mounted on a barge. If the crane is mounted on a barge, the entire vessel is referred to as a dredger.

2.What types of vessels have the superstructure on the bow?

Most offshore fleet has the superstructure built on the bow to increase visibility for navigators, lessen wind resistance, and therefore increase ship stability in High Seas and decreases fuel consumption. This tendency in shipbuilding has touched upon heavy lifts, supply and tug vessels, modern container carriers, lighters, cable layers, passenger liners as well as car carriers.

For example, the latest car carrier is distinguished by its unusual appearance, especially in fore part, where the cargo hold superstructure is shape-integrated with ship's bridge and bow (fore) part of the hull constituting a semi-sphere. Owing to this aerodynamic design, the ship achieves a reduction of wind resistance of up to 50% compared to conventional vessels. Based on calculations of an annual navigation rate of 75% under average hydrographic conditions for the North Atlantic Ocean, this new design can lead to fuel reduction up to 800 tons annually, which converts to achieving an annual reduction of approximately 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions.

Euro Marine Carrier B.V. - a Dutch company owned by Nissan Motor Car Carrier, operates this new car carrier transporting Nissan vehicles to Northern Europe and Russia. It is expected to show maximum effect in the North Sea area where the wind is known to be very strong.

3. What is the present situation and how can we see the further development of hovercraft technologies? / Do we have future in our country for hovercraft?

A hovercraft, also known as an air-cushion vehicle or ACV, is a craftcapable of travelling over land, water, mud or ice and other surfaces both at speed and when stationary. Hovercraft are hybrid vessels operated by a pilot as an aircraft rather than a captain as a marine vessel. Nonetheless, these vessels can be used both for military purposes as well as for recreational purposes such as inland racing and cruising on inland lakes and rivers, marshy areas, estuaries and inshore coastal waters.

For now, hovercraft technology is not more than a project in Ukraine. Although, it can be implemented to save money and time for cargo transfer in areas where it would be necessary to build canals for river and seagoing ships.

4. What is your favourite type of ship to work on?

There are many types of ships I would like to work on, because each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. If speaking about personal preferences I would consider working on cargo ships rather than on cruise ships. Firstly, you have a limited number of crew and it can be actually a quite nice environment to work in. Secondly, on a cargo ships you are on set watches (12-4, 4-8 or 8-12) so you know exactly when you’re working and what time you have off watch to rest. With less crew on board there are more chances to get know each other, grow up together in your job, and have a good company on shore for a cup of coffee. Besides these reasons, cargo ships especially offshore ships are highly paid and give you short time sea contracts so that you’re never isolated from your family for a long time, which is very important for young married seafarers.

5. Aboard what vessel do you want to become a captain?

This choice depends on life-plans. All big freighters will provide me with high salary, which is a prior goal for a seaman who chose such a challenging profession far from home. So, it’s only the matter of further development. If I feel ready to be in charge of a passenger ship which can be called a floating city of a couple of thousand people and demands much more responsibility, heightened level of time management skills so that to be 24 hours on stand-by, I’ll indulge into career development on cruise ships.

1. What is a galley? / What’s the name of the cooking area?

A galley is a place for cooking food on the ship. It has similar purpose as the kitchen on shore, therefore you can find there all necessary equipment for keeping food fresh (fridge) long term and cooking it (stove, pans, pots, plates etc).
