Вводный член предложения (Parenthesis)

Инфинитив в функции вводный член предложения употребляется в составе следующих словосочетаний:

To summarize – если подытожить	To be sure – конечно, несомненно
To be exact – точнее говоря	To begin with – начнем с того, что; для начала следует сказать, что
To be quite frank—откровенно говоря	To judge from – судя по; если судить по; если упомянуть; не говоря уже о
That is to say – иными словами	To make things worse — хуже того
To mention—если упомянуть…, то следует сказать, что	Needless to say – нет необходимости говорить
To name - если назвать	To say the least - чтобы не сказать больше
To put it more exactly – точнее говоря	To sum up – если подвести итог; следует сказать, что
To quote –если процитировать	To tell the truth (to speak the truth) – по правде говоря
To put it mildly—мягко говоря	To anticipate – забегая вперед, следует сказать, что
To say nothing of – не говоря уже о	To cut a long story short - короче говоря

Exercise 1. Translate into Russian.

ИНФИНИТИВНЫЕ ОБОРОТЫ (INFINITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS)

СЛОЖНОЕ ДОПОЛНЕНИЕ (COMPLEX OBJECT)

Конструкция Complex Object (Сложное дополнение) состоит из сочетания местоимения в объектном падеже или существительного в общем падеже с инфинитивом и употребляется после глаголов выражающих:

- восприятие (to see, to hear, to feel, to watch, to notice, to observe, etc.),

- умственную активность (to think, to believe, to suppose, to expect, to consider, to assume, to choose, to find, to know, etc.),

- желание (to want, to wish, to desire, to intent, to like, to hate, should (would) like, etc.),

- побуждение (to have, to let, to make),

- принуждение, приказ, просьбу, разрешение (to order, to force, to tell, to ask, to allow, to command, to demand, to require).

Complex Object переводится на русский язык дополнительным придаточным предложением, вводимым союзами как, что, чтобы.

Models:

We wanted the professor (him) to give a lecture.	Мы хотели, чтобы профессор прочел лекцию.
We know the professor to have given an excellent lecture on protein synthesis.	Мы знаем, что профессор прочел блестящую лекцию по синтезу белка.

Примечания.

1. Инфинитив в конструкции Complex Object употребляется без частицы to после глаголов, выражающих восприятие и побуждение.

Model:

I saw him cross the street.

Я видел, как он перешел улицу.

 

2. После глаголов: to expect

to anticipate надеяться, ожидать

to hope

инфинитив переводится обычно будущим временем.

Model:

We expected the professor (him) to give a lecture.

Мы ожидали, что профессор прочтет лекцию.

3. Complex Object может употребляется как после глаголов в личной форме, так и после причастия, герундия и инфинитива.

Model:

Assumingthe error to be negligible we ignored it.

Считая,что ошибка является незначительной, мы не обращали на нее внимания.

4. В конструкции Complex Object инфинитив в форме Passive Voice после глаголов to allow, to permit, to enable переводится на русский язык инфинитивом в действительном залоге, а стоящее за ним существительное –дополнением к инфинитиву.

Model:

This method allows the data to be easily obtained.

Этот метод позволяет легко получить данные.

5. Конструкция Complex Object может употребляется в определительном или дополнительном придаточном предложении. В этом случае оборот вводится относительными местоимениями that, what, which.

Model:

Here is the material (which) we consider to be suitable for our purpose.

Вот материал, который, как мы считаем, подходит для нашей цели.

Exercise 1. Make up sentences. Translate the sentences.

1. He felt Poirot to start the investigation.

2. I believe anger rise in him at these words.

3. The girl persuaded it to be wrong to trust Andrew.

4. I couldn’t bring you to give way to despair so easily.

5. She waited Mike accept their invitation.

6. I heard for the documents to be brought.

7. The manager asked myself to focus attention on the book.

8. I didn’t expect for him to continue his story,

Exercise 2. Use the Complex Object with prepositions, if necessary, and translate the sentences.

1. I heard (he, to take) a deep breath. 2. Clyde had a lot of trouble with getting (Frenchmen, to understand) his accent. 3. She waited (he, to sum up) his resolution. 4. Jean couldn’t bring (herself, to say) a definite “No”. 5. Alter an hour I began to long (the children, to come back). 6. He woke up when he heard (the door, to open and to close) upstairs but he made (himself, to shut one’s eyes and to relax) for some more minutes.

Exercise 3. Translate into Russian.

1. Our scientists want this crop to mature earlier in northern districts. 2. We know the maximum temperature for germination of tomato to be higher than that required for other crops. 3. The microscope reveals milk to consist of droplets of butter fat dispersed in watery fluid. 4. We know phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulphur to be the primary elements. 5. Diffusion shows molecules of any substance to be in motion. 6. Although bacteria do have visible chromosomes, no one has ever seen bacterial cells fuse. 7. We expect every student to know the difference between the roots of the two plants. 8. They know this plant to live for more than two seasons. 9. Scientists suppose the wild form of this crop to grow in Africa. 10. Exercise 4. Translate into English. Use the Complex Object.
