Unit 9

TEXT 9A

Angles

Learn the following active words and word combinations.

angle – угол

rotation – вращение, ротация

vertex – вершина

clockwise – по часовой стрелке

anticlockwise – против часовой стрелки

horizontal – горизонтальный

obtuse (angle) – тупой (угол),

angle of elevation – угол возвышения

angle of depression – угол падения (понижения).

Give the Russian equivalents for the following words and expressions from the text.

side (arm), acute angle, configuration, vertex, initial axis, to be specified, obtuse angle, reflex angle, rotation angle, above the plane, below the plane, round, angle of elevation, angle of depression.

Find the answers to these questions by quickly reading the text.

1 What is an angle?

2 According to what are angles classified?

Read and translate the text.

An angle is a configuration of two lines (the sides or arms) meeting at a point (the vertex). Often an angle is regarded as the measure of rotation involved in moving from one initial axis to coincide with another final axis (termed a directions angle). If the amount and sense of the rotation are specified the angle is a rotation angle, and is positive if measured in an anticlockwise sense and negative if in a clockwise sense.

Angles are classified according to their measure:

- Null (or zero) angle - zero rotation (0°).

- Right angle - a quarter of a complete turn (90°)

- Flat (or straight) angle - half a complete turn (180°).

- Round angle (or perigon) - one complete turn (360°),

- Acute angle - between 0° and 90°.

- Obtuse angle - between 90° and 180°.

- Reflex angle - between 180°and 360°.

The angle of elevation of a point A from another point В is the angle between the line AB and the horizontal plane through B, with A lying above the plane. The angle of depression is similarly defined with A lying below the plane. The angle at point В made by lines AB and CB is denoted by Z.ABC.

Find in the text English equivalents for the following Russian words and word combinations.

линия, точка, начальная ось, угол возвышения, измерять, плоскость, тупой угол, прямой угол, острый угол.

Find the words in the text that mean the following.

1. an angle equal to one-half of a complete turn.

2. any flat or level surface or an imaginary flat surface through or joining material objects.

3. an element of geometry having position but no magnitude.

4. going across and parallel to the ground rather than going up and down.

Now complete the sentences with the appropriate form of the words from exercise 6.

1. Can you describe this ___ plane?

2. Is ___angle or acute angle equal to one-half of a complete turn?

3. A ___ in three-dimensional space is defined by its coordinates (x,y,z).

4 An angle of half a complete turn is called ___ angle.

8. Which of the following statements are true or false?

1. An angle is a configuration of two lines (the sides or arms) meeting at a point (the vertex).

2. Right angle is a half  of a complete turn.

3. Obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°.

4. The angle of depression of a point A from another point В is the angle between the line AB and the horizontal plane through B, with A lying above the plane.
