Aeroflot Flight 244

  Aeroflot Flight 244 was the scene of the first successful aircraft hijacking in the Soviet Union on 15 October 1970 when the Brazinskas, a father and his son seized an An-24 domestic passenger plane en route from Batumi, Georgian SSR. In a shootout with guards on board, 19-year-old air-hostess Nadezhda Kurchenko was killed and several members of the crew were wounded. The hijackers commandeered the plane to Trabzon, Turkey, and surrendered to the Turkish government. The Brazinskas were tried and imprisoned, but Turkey refused to cede them to the Soviet authorities. The plane with its passengers was soon returned to the USSR.

 

Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305

November 24, 1971: A man who became known as D. B. Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, a Boeing 727 aircraft flying from Portland to Seattle, received US$200,000 in ransom, and parachuted from the plane. The actual name of the hijacker remains unknown. The hijacker threatened with a bomb to a flight attendant and demanded the ransom and parachutes. The flight landed in Seattle, and FBI agents provided the ransom money and parachutes. Cooper then released all passengers and one flight attendant. After refueling, the aircraft took off again and flew toward Reno. Cooper opened the aft stairs and jumped from the plane with a parachute during a heavy rainstorm. The aircraft was forced to land with the aft stairs deployed. The FBI believes Cooper most likely did not survive, but the case remains unsolved.

 

Ovechkin family hijacking

March 8, 1988: Ovechkin family (a mother and her 10 children) attempted to hijack a TU 154 flight from Irkutsk to Leningrad while trying to escape from the USSR. They managed to smuggle weapon in musical boxes to the board. Sizing the plane they demanded to fly abroad, intending to ask the government of that country about political asylum. The plane landed on a military airfield near Vyborg and was then stormed. A stewardess and three passengers were killed. The mother was killed by one of her sons by her own request, and then four of them committed suicide.
