Text. Where To Go And What To See In Kyiv.

Khreshchatyk, the beautiful many-faced, brightly-lit main street of Kyiv, hasn’t always been like this. Originally it was Khreshchata Dolyna covered with forests and ravines. At the beginning of the 19th century the first wooden houses were built there, later stone buildings were erected. Practically all of them were ruined during the Great Patriotic War but later were restored by the Kyivites. The street leads to Independence Square, the main square of Kyiv which now together with Khreshchatyk, is the favourite place for entertainment for the citizens and guests of the city.
Museum lovers will find hundreds of beautiful exhibits in the Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts whose 21 galleries contain valuable collections of Ukrainian icons, pictures and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century, including some works by TarasShevchenko. Hisother paintings, manuscripts and personal belongings can be found in the Taras Shevchenko State Museum in Shevchenko Boulevard and in the museum in Kanev, his burial place. Another rich collection of pictures and sculptures can be seen in the Russian Arts Museum, which is the third largest after those of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Theatre-goers will never be bored in Kyiv as there are theatres to all tastes: the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet House with wonderful singers and dancers, the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre, the Lesya Ukrainka Drama Theatre, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the Kyiv Philharmonic Society, the Musical Drama Theatre and many others, all with wonderful highly-professional performers.
Wherever you go in Kyiv, you will see either a beautiful old building or a monument, a green park or an amazingly decorated church – it is so full of places of interest that it’s difficult to name even half them.
The present and the past live side by side in Kyiv, and both lovers of history and people who are interested in the contemporary life of the capital, will find something to their taste in the busy streets of Kyiv.

- If you’re interested in architecture you shouldn’t fail to see the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra in the first place. It’s an architectural monument of the 17-th century. Then St. Sophia’s Cathedral in St. Sophia square and Andriyvska Church which is not far from it are certainly worth seeing, too.
- What else should I see?
- You’ve never been to Kyiv, have you? Then I advise you to take a walking tour of the Dnieper slopes. They are very picturesque.
- I heard a lot about the Dnieper slopes and Kyiv parks. Unfortunately, I’m too short of time to see them all.
- Excuse me. Is this the right way to Khreshchatyk?
- Yes, go straight ahead for two blocks and then turn left. You’ll see a cinema there. You can’t miss it. Take the next turning on the right and you’ll find yourself in Khreshchatyk.
- How long will it take me to get there?
- It’s no distance at all, say, 15 minutes’ walk from here. You could get there by trolley-bus, but it’s hardly worth it.
- Thank you very much.
- It’s nothing.

1.The Obligue Moods. The Synthetical and Analytical Forms
The function of the obligue moods is to represent something in the speaker’s mind not as a real fact, but as a wish, purpose, supposition, doubt or condition problematic or contrary to fact. There are four obligue moods in Modern English, of which two are synthetical and two analytical.
The synthetical moods are – Subjunctive I and Subjunctive II.
The analytical moods are – the Conditional and Suppositional.
2.The Use of Subjunctive Mood in Simple Sentences
a) Smb had better + V. It means strong advice.

AGRICULTURE IN SUMY REGION.
Sumy region is situated in the north-east of Ukraine. Its area is 25,800 square kilometers. Steppes and plains compose the most part of Sumy region territory. The topsoils are mainly black. They are the biggest treasure of our land. That’s why agriculture is one of the most important elements in the region’s economy. This sector provides the basis for fulfilling the most basic social needs of the people. It also has a great potential for further development as a source of raw materials for regional-based food processing industry.
In Sumy region they grow sugar beet, winter wheat, winter rye, spring barley, buckwheat, millet, maize, sunflower, potatoes and other vegetables.
In field crop cultivation special attention is paid to correct crop rotation, improvement of soil tillage, the use of organic and mineral fertilizers, timely weed, pest and disease control. Another important branch of farm production in the region is animal husbandry. Animal farms specialize in meat-dairy cattle raising, poultry farming, fishing. Bee-keeping is being developed. Much work is done on the improvement of animal breeds.
The territory of Sumy region is well-supplied with water resources. The principal rivers are the Desna, the Psel, the Sula, the Seim, the Vorskla. About 15 per cent of the area is covered with forests. Natural resources are sufficient for creating a developed internal market and becoming an equal partner in the world market. Since 1990 market reforms in the agricultural complex have been progressing steadily. Responding to the decree of the President, all collective agricultural enterprises have been dissolved and reorganized into private joint stock companies. This privatization activity is expected to stimulate the development of the basic production sector. No doubt, the transition to a market economy requires a relatively long period of time. But there is every reason to believe that our country will quickly enter the family of Europe’s leading countries.
