The Paper Chaise Recycling Programs Gain in Popularity

With landfill space getting scarcer all the time, the effort to recycle paper has become imperative for people throughout the industrialized world. Paper is a large part of the problem about 30 percent of total domestic waste in Europe is paper and board products, in the United States, the total is some 40 percent

Governments are taking note Several U S states, for instance, already have laws imposing a minimum content of recycled fiber in newsprint. A law proposed in Germany would require that all paper packaging be recycled instead of discarded by 1995, and the European Commission is considering similar legislation.

The private sector is responding as well Japan's Fujitsu Corp isslowly switching from the manufacture of coated paper fax machines to fax machines that work with plain paper. According to Michael Betrne, Fujitsu's spokesperson in Tokyo, "Most coated fax paper is made from virgin paper. But if our fax machines use plain paper, that paper can be recycled."

Meanwhile Wisconsin-based Consolidated Papers, Inc, is making coated paper out of recycled paper The problem, explains company president Patrick Brennan is that while the coating process requires a clean surface, recycled paper usually contains "stickles" from glue and adhesives in the paper itself "A sticky the size of a pinhead and invisible to the human eye," says Brennan, "can shut down a multimillion dollar paper machine "

Other companies are investing in collection and sorting systems. One effort has been spearheaded by the Brussels-based European Recovery and Recycling Association (ERRA), a 25-company group with such members as Switzerland's Tetra Pak, America's Coca-Cola, France's Perrier, and Britain's Cadbury Beverages and British Steel. According to ERRA's managing director, Jacques Fonteyne, the group is setting up model curbside programs in the Netherlands, Ireland, France, the United States, Spain and Belgium. People are being asked to sort their garbage either into-recyclable any non-recyclable bins or, in some cases, into separate bins for glass, metal, plastic and paper.

Other industry coalitions, such as the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment, with branches throughout Europe, are recycling paper, too. Norway's Elopak, a beverage carton manufacturer and alliance member, for example, is working with the Keyes paper factory, also in Norway, to turn plastic-coated beverage cartons into egg boxes. Tetra-Pak, another Alliance member, is transforming aseptic beverage containers into a durable, water-resistant chipboard that can be used like wood.
