"A person who has no friends, lives only half way." – Unknown 10. "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." – Dale Carnegie 11. "Life is partly what we make it, and partly what is made by the friends whom we choose." 3. Discuss the following statements: HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY... In friendship "honesty" is the key word. One should always be honest to his or her friends. Praise them honestly and openly. Say you're sorry, when you hurt your friend. GIVE MORE THAN YOU TAKE... Be there when they need you or you may wind up alone. BE SUPPORTIVE... Cheer them on, we all need encouragement now and then. Encourage their dreams and aspiration, Life seems almost meaningless without them. Your words count, use them wisely. Use good judgement. Wish them luck, hopefully good. Just be there when they need you. Really listen, a friendly ear is a soothing balm FORGIVENESS... Forgive them for, "To Err is Human", and you just may end up making the same mistakes in course of time. KEEP THE FAITH... Have faith in them. For, there is no love without trust. Zip your lips when they confide in you EXPRESS YOURSELF CLEARLY… Know when they need a hug, and couldn't you use one? Offer to help, and know when. "No, thanks" is just politeness. Quietly disagree, noisy No's make enemies.
Friendship isn't always easily described. The Eskimos, they say, have a hundred different words for snow. Unfortunately, the English language isn't quite as innovative, though it has vast opportunities to differentiate meaning. Certainly, Love is one of those opportunities. And so, too, is Friendship. Instead of different words, however, we use simple adjectives. Close friend. Best friend. Childhood friend. Intimate friend. Trusted friend. Beloved friend. Friends are special people. Our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the adjectives we choose. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life.

Topic 4. MASS MEDIA (СРЕДСТВА МАССОВОЙ ИНФОРМАЦИИ) Topical vocabulary
Text A. Press Read, translate the text. The mass media is an important part in our life. They include press, radio and television. Getting information is one of daily necessities of a human being. Newspapers and various magazines are often call periodicals. We should take into consideration that periodicals are divided into two groups. Some issues are serious or “quality” ones. Others represent newspapers and magazines which help us to relax and have a rest. As for “quality” periodicals, they give information of current events including the description of home and foreign affairs, political and social problems and news regarding cultural sphere in our country and abroad. A wide range of problems is touched upon in the articles. The majority of articles are addressed to the general reader. Some authors give a description of opinions and impressions of their own. Others report on current events and compare the viewpoints of different political leaders. Some years ago the majority of people were accustomed to subscribe to several editions. To tell the truth, at present some people can’t afford it. As for my family, we subscribe to the only newspaper – “Arguments and facts”. It is considered to be one of the most popular issues. This newspaper is popular with both young people and grown-ups. The press in general can be called a mirror of current events. “Arguments and facts” is not an exception. Its editorials and articles contain a lot of interesting information. The articles which are dedicated to the problems of the development of our economy are of great significance. I would like to stress that it gives me a great pleasure to read the articles which are devoted to the so-called youth problems. The articles which give a description of scientific and educational spheres are of paramount importance as well. 2. Answer the questions: 1. What do the mass media include? 2. What is one of daily necessities of a human being? 3. What helps us to relax and have a rest? 4. What kind of information do “quality” periodicals give? 5. Do you subscribe to any editions? 6. What are your favorite editions? 7. What kind of articles do you prefer to read?
