Sociology of a Family.

The most basic of all social institutions is the family. Every human society has some sort of family system. A stable family unit is necessary because human babies require an extended period of parental attention and socialization in order to survive and become functioning members of their society. A stable family unit is also made more likely by the fact that human sexual relations are not restricted to a breeding season, as in the case with other species.

The structure of the family varies to a great extent from one society to another. The reasons for these variations have to do with other aspects of the culture and the need to fulfill basic needs.

Members of every society generally believe that their particular society’s marriage and family patterns are the most appropriate.

Unlike many other subjects studied at Institutes and Universities, the family is one of the subject students often believe they already know all about. The vast majority of people have the first-hand experience of at least one family. In fact, most people have only limited knowledge of families because their belief about the family is formed largely from their own experience. Their personal background does little to prepare them for the wide diversity of families.
