Mathematics in Daily Life

Too often, I go dumbfounded at the billing section in a shopping store, and happen to easily believe whatever the salesman asks me to pay. I never calculate myself, mostly because neither do I have the patience, nor do I have the prowess to add, subtract, multiply, or divide numbers chop-chop in a single go. Calculators are my thing! I never exercised my math abilities in front of others - I was never good at it (actually, I sucked!). But is that all about mathematics? Do you need it only at a shopping store? Is it limited to just adding or subtracting numbers? Absolutely not. I was ignorant, not to have realized the ubiquity of mathematics in daily life, and the reasons behind it being one subject that is known to transcend all boundaries in terms of culture. So, that really makes me wonder, what actually is the importance of mathematics in daily life? Of course, you need not use the properties of logarithms, algebra, and trigonometry to sort out your daily issues, but then, you need mathematics to sustain from day to night. Don't believe me? Take a look at the following section. Use of Mathematics in Daily Life. What time do you wake up in the morning? 7 am? What if it's 6:50 am? You'll thank the Almighty for getting 10 minutes of extra sleep, wouldn't you? Well, did you notice that we used a tad-bit of mathematics here? The watch is the most common and the most wide-spread example of using math in everyday life. Just think about it, had there been no watches and clocks in the world, the word 'discipline' would have lost its existence forever. Calculations, currencies, counts, laps, bills of all kinds, days, months, years… We never tend to notice, but we're using mathematics for all purposes. We do calculations in the back of our mind while cooking, going to office, refueling our cars and bikes, waiting for the weekdays to get over so that we can party on the weekend (wink!), getting our salaries, watching sports matches, and most importantly, for information technology. Now, tell me, wouldn't it dread you to think of a life without mathematics? Just imagine, had there been no numbers in this world, how would we even live? Today, even if a person is not highly educated, he can sustain easily in comparison to the one who never even learned the table of 2 all his life! Use of Mathematics in Business. My boss says, "I don't care how, all I want is numbers!". Well, every boss says so. That's where we start playing around with mathematics at work and business. On the other hand, our account information, shopping, eating out, etc. are some examples of using various branches of mathematics on a daily basis. Who doesn't know the importance of mathematics in business decisions? A miss of a single digit has the capability of slumping you down from riches to rags. Business consultants, officers, employees of all kinds, and even a peon today is required to be well-educated and have logical skills in order to get a job. However, the higher the post, the higher the qualification becomes. But we cannot ignore the omnipresence of mathematics, can we? It seems as if, without using mathematics and math terms in daily life, we would become disabled, wouldn't we? You think of a single aspect of your life, and I bet you won't be able to manage it without using a tad-bit of mathematics. From business transactions to money making, from counting the number of burgers you eat to waiting for Halloween from months before, from checking the mileage of your car to somehow surviving with the limited salary you get, where do you don't use mathematics? I, somehow, feel that the most pitied person in the world is not the one who cannot count, but the one who refuses to count!
