Read the dialogue "Choosing a Career" (p. 144 of your Student's book) and write out the information that proves that Amy and Brad:

•have huge plans for the future;

•have their own preferences;

•know much about career choices.

1) Brad understands that he has to go to college if he wants to become a doctor.

Amy doesn't plan on working on her minimum wage job forever. Brad wants to combine a good, satisfying job with a high paying salary. He hopes that he will be happy and successful as a doctor.

2) Brad really wants to help sick people and of course make lots of money.

Brad thinks it's important to support yourself and be able to buy things that you want.

Amy says that Brad certainly works hard enough. She is sure he will reach all his goals if he keeps working this hard.

Amy is sure Brad will never become unemployed for years like his Uncle Sam. She believes he is going to make a great doctor.

3) Brad thinks it's best to do something that you like and it makes you feel happy. His father is a lawyer and he is very disappointed that Brad doesn't want to follow him in that profession.

Brad's cousin works as a medical laboratory technician and it only took her two years to get her training and certification.

Amy thinks Brad is right about finding a job that makes you happy. Her father hates his job.

Brad's mother was a teacher before she married his father. She told him once that she liked teaching very much but that it didn't pay a very high salary. She manages a shoe store now and makes a good salary but doesn't like it as much as teaching.

Your Language Portfolio: Reading. WB p. 69 (b)

•job;

job salary
Brad has to go to college if he wants to become a doctor. Brad's father is a lawyer and he is very disappointed that Brad doesn't want to follow him in that profession. Amy could start by becoming a veterinary assistant. She can get a certificate for that at a junior college. Brad's cousin works as a medical laboratory technician and it only took her two years to get her training and certification. Amy thinks Brad is right about finding a job that makes you happy. Her father hates his job. Amy's father works as an accountant in a bank. Brad hopes that he will be happy and successful as a doctor. Brad's Uncle Sam has been unemployed for years and doesn't even try to get a job. Amy believes Brad is going to make a great doctor. Amy doesn't plan on working on her minimum wage job forever. Amy doesn't understand why adults care about money so much. What everyone talks about is money. Brad, thinks it's important to support yourself and be able to buy things that you want. Amy wonders she has to be miserable at some boring job 40 hours per week.
Brad wants to combine a good, satisfying job with a high paying salary. Brad's mother was a teacher before she married his father. She told him once that she liked teaching very much but that it didn't pay a very high salary. She manages a shoe store now and makes a good salary but doesn't like it as much as teaching. Your Language Portfolio: Reading. SB p. 161 (c)

Say which of the three British children said these words. Can you develop their ideas?

Fll base my life around the thing I like in every possible way. Kevin
This assured me that I wanted to go into this profession. Paul
I don't think my family can offer the fees. Carol
I can always get a student loan that I pay back later. Carol
The future employers love a "gap year". Kevin
I really wanted to find out if I was suited to the profession. Paul
My job really makes me happy. Kevin
I want to see the world myself, smell it, hear it, feel it. Kevin

Your Language Portfolio: Reading. SB p. 162 (d)

Copy the table in your workbook. Fill in the chart and comment on the teenagers' decisions.

Name Reason of choice Solution Job chosen
Carol Low A-levels need to contribute to the family income. To try a job in a company which wants her to do certain courses for her position so she could develop and get a promotion. A job which offers any training or opportunities for her to study, to work and to get experience.
Kevin Surfing is the only thing in his life that truly makes him hap- py- He went to college until he was 18. He passed his A-levels, then went surfing around the world on what they call a "gap year". He works as a beach lifeguard in Cornwall.
Paul He had an ambition to become a lawyer. He started looking for a job in a law firm. He put his CV together, made lots of copies and posted them to as many law firms as he could find. He was accepted as an office junior at a law firm only a 15-minute bus ride from his house.

Your Language Portfolio: Reading. SB p. 162 (e)

Your Language Portfolio: Reading. WB p. 74 (a)

Read about the teenagers' decisions of a good start (p. 158 of your Student's book) and enlarge on the following statements.

1) Carol can always get a student loan.

She hopes she will be able to save up some money so that she could then go to university. And if the worst comes to worst and she really doesn't enjoy her work and wants to get back to studying, she can always get a student loan that she pays back later.

2) Kevin refuses to follow in anyone’s footsteps.

He'll base his life around surfing in every possible way. He wants to do exactly what he is doing right now. He doesn't want to see the world in the movies or read about it in books. He wants to see it himself, smell it, hear it and feel it. He refuses to follow in anyone's footsteps.

3) Paul has found a job that answers all the traditional requirements.
He could see that his new job answered all the traditional requirements:

job satisfaction, career possibilities, good working conditions and stability. This assured him that he wanted to go into this profession.

Your Language Portfolio: Reading. WB p. 75 (b)

From the same text write out the information which proves that:

•There are many right ways...

•It is important to show independence...

•Experience is a dear school...

1) There are many right ways to go to the university: to have high A-level, to save up money, to get a student loan.

2) It is important to show independence because future employers love it.

3) Experience is a dear school because you can develop your skills and find out if you like this working environment.
