A hobby is what you like to do in your spare time. It’s a favorite occupation of a person. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life is more interesting and exciting.

Hobbies differ like tastes. The most popular hobbies are philately, collecting post-cards, coins and books, reading books, learning foreign languages and sports.

Some people are interested in music. They collect records and tape recordings. And others are keen on photography. Women are often fond of knitting or sewing.

People living in cities and towns would like to be closer to nature, so they are fond of spending their spare time in the country. Some of them go on hikes, and some find pleasure working in their gardens.

For example, gardening and growing flowers, especially roses, is the most common hobby among Englishmen.

Nowadays many new hobbies have appeared. Many people are fond of hunting but not with guns. They enjoy “hunting” the sea animals and fish with a camera.

Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. It has become one of numerous hobbies.

Very often hobbies help you to choose your future profession.

As for Nick he is very fond of listening to music. That is why he has recently decided to collect compact disks. Nick has a good ear for music and like metal very much. Besides metal, he also like rock, jazz and classical music. He doesn’t like techno, pop music and rap. He himself says that he likes any good music. Now Nick collects compact disks of his favorite groups and singers, he carefully studies the information printed on disk booklets. He also tries to find out everything about the singers he likes. That’s why he reads a lot of specialized magazines and never misses MTV shows (he thinks he must keep up with the news in the world of music). He even writes letters to some fan-clubs in other countries, so he has to brush up his English.

Read and translate the dialogues. Learn them by heart.

– Ann, would you like a computer in your room?

I would I think. I can type and thus use the keyboard to enter information. The monitor shows what you type so you can correct mistakes very easily. Then the printer quickly produces what you need. They are excellent for storing information on a disk

So, you know how to use computer?

I know only the simplest things – time-saving tricks for a typist. Nothing more. But I’m willing to learn.

Are you interested in taking a course?

Oh yes. Very much.

Good. We’ll see to that.

2. – What are you doing tonight?

- I’m staying in. There’s a good horror film on TV.

- What’s it?

- The blood of Frankenstein.

- Oh, that sounds frightening.

- Not really… I think horror films are amusing.

- Amusing? Horror films?

- Yes, I went with Ann to see “Dracula” last week. I was very amused. I laughed from beginning to end.

- What about Ann?

- Oh, she was terrified. I hadn’t expected she would be.

3.- Listen! Somebody is playing the piano!

- Yes, it sounds nice, doesn’t it? I wish I could play a musical instrument.

- Don’t you play the violin?

-No, but my sister does. Actually she is pretty good at it.

-I took flute lessons for a couple of years, but I never learnt to play very well. I guess I don’t have any musical talent.

-Oh, that’s not true. You sing very well. I can’t even do that.
