COUNTABLE NOUNS

Nouns can be countable or uncountable.

Uncountable nouns are things we cannot count. They have no plural. Before uncountable nouns you can say the/some/any/much/this/his etc. you cannot use a/an or you can use them alone, with no article.

Some nouns are usually uncountable in English but often countable in other languages:

Accommodation, advice, baggage, behaviour, chaos, furniture, information, luggage, news, permission, progress, scenery, traffic, travel, trouble, weather, work

Note these pairs of countable or uncountable nouns:

I’m looking for a job (countable) but I’m looking for work (uncountable)

What a lovely view! (countable) but What lovely scenery! (uncountable)

Countable nouns are thing we can count. We can make plural. Before singular countable nouns you can use a/an. You cannot use singular countable nouns alone (without a/the/ my etc.).

We often use a/an+noun when we say what something is, or what something, someone is like.

We use a/an for a job.

We also use some=a number of / a few of (we don’t know exactly how many). You have to use some when you mean some but not all/ not many. Don’t use some when you are talking about things in general.
